Knee Replacement Question?

Hi Pauline. I have had total knee replacements on both knees due to an accident. I did receive blood transfusions on both knees. I had to donate my own blood (4 pints) prior to each knee surgery. I was given back all 4 pints, both times. As well, post surgically they collected my drainage from the surgery at bedside and after the second or third day after my surgery that drainage, which is fluid and blood, was transfused back into my body thru IV's. Sorry if this sounds graphic, but it is how it happens. They have found that by giving you your own fluids back it really helps the healing process somehow. If you are unable to donate the needed blood prior to your surgery, perhaps you could get some family and friends to donate for you. Thanks for your reply. I will ask for family to donate after I see my "blood doctor." I have to have iron infusions regularly as it is, and I know that if I gave blood the resulting hemoglobin level would be too low.

Your description wasn't overly graphic as I've worked in hospitals, and my sister decsribed the same thing to me. It's nice to get the same message.

Your welcome, and I wish you good luck and a speedy recovery. My two best words of advice for you…do your exercises regularly after surgery, and ICE is your best friend. Don't be afraid to use it as often as possible.
