Lots of parents here who can offer help. The major difference between blood sugars of type 1 and type 2 is that a type 1 can have a much larger swing than most type 2's. 600 at diagnosis is actually on the lower end to stories I've heard from other type 1's.

I wasn't a child when diagnosed, but in my early 20s. (Over 20 years now.) My BS was 785. Of course, I also had keytones in the urine. There shouldn't be any keytones.

One they get your niece regulated, she'll be fine. She will learn as she grows.

I wish her good health and lots of hugs to help her through the difficult times that are sure to come. But not to worry... There will be a lot of good times, too.

I hadn't gotten very sick when I was diagnosed at age 11 -- my blood sugar was 480. Since a Type 1 diabetic doesn't produce insulin at all, they can go a lot higher -- Type 2 diabetics are resistant to insulin, so they at least still get some (at least at first, I believe they do).

I've had numbers in the four and five hundreds when something wasn't right -- they'll get her under control. It just takes time and a lot of learning. I can't imagine being that young with diabetes.

It is so hard when youngin's get hit with this. My heart goes out to her and you...family during the trials of this new diagnosis until she finds the right medications if need be, nutrition, exercise, etc. Good luck to you all! *HugS* Sheila

I hate to say this; I know it will be taken wrong; but I was diagnosed at 4 and I consider it a blessing. I never really had a chance to learn bad habits, and find that it is actually easier for me to do what I'm supposed to do because of that. If there are any blessings in a diagnosis like this, that's one of them.
