Hmmm perhaps celery stick or carrot to munch on when you feel the need to smoke. It will help give you that oral fixation that you maybe craving.

I don't have teeth...well I have my dentures but never use them...BUT I think I'll take this idea...I could nibble at them at least and that should help thank you! Sheila

How about doing your own version of GiGong/ similar to tai chi. When I first started I could not do all of the moves, but gradually I'm incresing my range of motion and my endurace... You can do some of the movements sitting down... Meditation/ Yoga is all good for calming the mind... it will just take time for the physical addiction to lighten up... drink enough water daily... eight/eight ounce servings I know you have limitations with walking, but any exercise is helpful... Some people chew gum as a distraction... Sucking on diabetic hard candy when you feel the urge to smoke might help... Detoxing just takes time... good circulation is going to make it go more smoothly... like having a filtering system... imagine a glass of water with two teaspoons of dirt stired into... no filtering system, so you stir it up and the water gets cloudy, it settles to the bottom, and you stir it up again... you have to have some way for the mud to filter out of the water... exercise is a filter system... you sweet out the toxins... soaking in a hot bath helps too... anything that makes you sweat it out... Find out how to doing a daily dry brush massage... ( you buy a natural bristle dry body massage brush... then just lightly in a circular movement massage your skin...) this gets rid of dead skin cells, and opens up the pores. Our skin is the body's largest breathing organ... It is the primary way the body throws off toxins... That's why what we wear has such a major affect on our bodies, like, panty hose or chemically ladened materials... we absorb those chemicals into our systems... that's why natural fibres are better for us, fibes like cotton and wool and silk... The main thing to focus on is keeping a calm focus. When you are fighting an intense crave session, don't dispair... congratulation yourself for being courageous... and sit down and do some creative writing about why you want to stop hurting your body... It isn't always about food... our appetites are varried... the five senses give us lots of ways to choose to full up our senses... it doesn't have to be about food... experiment with options.... hugs

Ya know, I was just telling Ty that I"ll probably walk more...when I get urges to smoke badly...I am walking MUCH better lately! YAY...thanks for your ideas. Sheila

Jocelyn replied June 12, 2009 4:41 AM

hey Sheila, how is it going? are you finding it easier to cope? it can be challenging to change behaviors... it just isn't something anyone finds easy to do... obviously Marketing is prospering on that fact. Maybe just the image of not giving the manipulators satisfaction for controlling your behavior might be inspiring and motivating... lol I worked in writing copy for television and radio for several years, and let me tell you, advertising has a target audience for everyone... They have it down to a science... So consentrate and win your goal.. I'm rooting for you Sheila... just be kind to yourself as you manage your progress... okay...? it's easy to get into becoming too hard on yourself... then you'll you lapse back into the redundant loop of quiting/starting... One guy I knew was so funny with his wanting to quit... Finally he told everyone, " It's easy to quit... I do it all the time..." lol find humor in your process... and don't give up...

good luck... Jocelyn

lipsie replied June 12, 2009 11:40 AM

Well, I did slip once last night...but that was it!! Back on track now so we're good! I think I did darn good for me from at least a two packs a day to ONE smoke...thanks for the encouragement...I REALLY need it cuz I really don't have many friend outside of here. Ty was great, he did not slip once!! *Hugs* Sheila

Jocelyn replied June 12, 2009 2:52 PM

hey Sheila, that's great! I read some where that it takes twenty-one days for the body to break a physical addiction to something, and that the longer the addiction was, the more intense those twenty-one days can be. Maybe it would help to mark your calendar with the beginning of those twenty one days cycles, and see how soon you can make it through a complete cycle... because everytime you break the rhythm you have to start over... like if you went ten out the twenty one, and smoked, you'd have to start over at day one again... becing conscious of that fact, can give you that extra nudge to keep on track when you are tempted to cheat on your goal... fascinating huh? good luck, hugs, Jocelyn

Sheila and Ty, the best thing to do is deep breathing. In through your nose and out through your mouth. It gives the same affect to your brain as dragging on a cigarette. You can also use a straw cut to the size of a cigarette to draw on and it might help when the cravings hit. Crunchy food seems to help too don't know why but pretzel sticks, carrot sticks, sugar free hard candy (but don't eat to much it will make you spend too much time in the potty lol)

It isn't very ladyllike, but my mom used a toothpick. She kept a toothpick on her to fidget with, put in her mouth and have something to keep her busy. It worked wonders. She has since kicked the toothpick habit too, no patch required! LOL

I smoked for over 20 yrs. I did the patch to quit. Sure, I gained some weight. Then, I joined Weight Watchers to lose what I had gained. Lost 3o lbs. I did each stage of the patch for onlt 2 wks each instead of what the box instructed. That was back in 2005. I'm still smoke-free.
Try chewing on some gum. Go for a walk.
Call a friend. Do this every time you get the urge to pick up something to put into your mouth. You may need to change some of your routines. If you stick to it, you WILL succeed.
Good Luck, Judi

Girl, you can do this..if my grandmother can quit,..anyone can!! She's not diabetic, but she uses the short little pretzel sticks when she gets cravings...she took the Chantrix 2 months ago, and hasn't smoked now for over a month!!! She did "mourn" a little over the loss of her friend of over 50 years...(at least thats how she felt, the cigs had always been there for her no matter what..lol). She still goes out to break with her smoker friends...does everything like normal, except takes her little bag of pretzels with her. She has motivated me to start taking cessation classes. I will keep everyone posted on that..in the meantime...keep US posted..K? I am pulling for you!

I tried to quit, started again but am now quitting again and am determined about it! I suck diabetic candies and drink a lot of ice tea that I make. I don't make sweet ice tea. Anyway, that keeps my stomach filled and helps me not want to smoke. I'm tempted every day and it's hard but I have to do this for my health and finances! Sorry, I haven't learned all the computer language yet except lol. I wish all of you the best in beating this nasty habit that is so bad for those of us with diabetes, especially bad. I'll keep reading and adding my replies to this discussion since it's something I really need. Take care.

Jocelyn replied June 12, 2009 5:29 PM

good for you maxcat! and wishing you the best in reaching your goal of being a quiter... then you can say, " I was done"... hugs, Jocelyn

I am sorry to say but Ty and I both started again though not nearly as much. *sigh* I was having suicidal thoughts and some other side effects from that medication and Ty has some side effects called a pharmacist about it, was told of his risk cuz of heart problems and his symptoms so he threw his away. I am sorry ya all that I could not make it!! Love yasssssss Sheila

Judi62 replied June 15, 2009 4:00 PM

Have you tried the Nicoderm patches? It worked for me. Also, if you and Ty smoke in the house, make a new rule. No more smoking in the house for no one. Even if it is pouring the rain down and freezing outside, that is where you must go to have a smoke. Stick to your guns.
You both can do it. If I can after almost 30 years, then anyone can.

I have faith in you. Just KEEP TRYING! Don't give up. And don't punish yourself, if you should slip up. It may take several restarts. With each other's support and us around you, I know that one day you'll wake up and not even think about having a cigarette that day. You just need to keep busy. Idle time brings on the cravings. Trust me, I know.

Don't stop trying. In the long run, you both will feel much better.

*HUGS* Judi

Hey Shelia,

Don't get discouraged. Breaking the habit can be hard. Cutting back is a good start. Also, it is a side effect of Chantix to have suicidal thoughts. I'm glad you stopped taking it. Just keep trying. Remember, you may stumble and even fall, but it's important to pick yourself up and try again. If having a life free from cigarettes is a goal for you, keep working at it.

Nicotine is an addiction, but you can break it with determination and support. We are here for you. You don't have to apologize to us for falling back into an old habit. Just pick yourself up and try again. When we learned to walk, we take one hesitant step after another until we finally walked to whomever or whatever it was urging us on. You can do this Ty and Shelia, just keep trying. We'll be here to catch you and support you if you should fall.

*hugs*

Judi
