Dr took me off Avadamet (the one taken off the market) a few months before it was recalled, and put me on 45mg Actos (am) and 500 Metformin (am and after dinner) and my A1c's are usually 6.5 or lower, one month 5.8. I did not notice a weight gain with it, and I do well with it. I also added 500 mg cinnamon (2 capsules) at bedtime about a year ago, and I think this is also working well to keep my bs down.
Good luck. We each react differently to the meds. S2
I was recently prescribed this medication and due to problems with other meds in the past I always do research before I start taking any meds. When you go to drugs.com the very first thing you see on the screen is a warning that this drug can cause congestive heart failure. So buyer beware.
I am on Actos and have been for several yrs now. Until a few months ago I was also on Glucovance 5/500. I am now on very small doses(I cut the pills in 1/2 & 1/4) of the Gluco when and if my BS gets a little high. My A1C on 8/7 was 7.0.
My doctor just put me on Actoplus Met, Is this the same thing you are on? and does anyone know about this drug?
I have read one of the pamplets that the pharmacy gives you about info on the drug, well it said one that if your taking this certain med, don't take it, but my doctor knows i'm on this other medicine, I don't know why he gave me this new medicine, I did not start it yet until I talk with my heart dr and my family doctor, but if yu know about this drug, can someone help me out with it.
i take it and have for a long time cant remem which is which but one is to help you produce more insulin and the other better insulin hope this helped .
Thank-you all for your answers to my question, and I will discuss this option with my Dr. at our next meeting.I am aware that different meds work differently for all of us but since my trials with Metaformin and Prandin I am very leary of trying new meds.I am doing well on the Lantus once a day before bed but it does seem to be running out on me by 1:00pm and then my sugars go higher than I like in the late afternoon…so, I'm looking at adding another Med or insulin for the afternoons. I would like to take Lantus twice a day but for some reason my Endo seems to not want to tell me how to do this. I know some people do take it twice a day..but I don't want to try it and do it wrong..so, I guess I will just have to wait and see what the Dr. says at my next appointment..Sigh..it is just soooo frustrating to have an Endo that is not accessable all the time, but I really have no other option. Thank-you all again, I do so appreciate the help and information!!
HI GUYS, SORRY i WAS OUT SO LONG. vERY BUSY…ANYWAY MOM HAS BEEN ON aCTOS FOR SEVERAL YEARS. SHE ONLY WEIGHTS 115 BUT SINCE SHE AHS BEEN BACK WITH ME SHE HAS GAINED.
I took Actos+Met and, not only did I gain weight, although it did manage my sugar quite well, my trigs and my cholesterol went a little wacky. I now take Januvia and Metformin and I gotta tell you this cocktail works very well… Anyway it is important to understand that every person is different and what works for me doesn't necessarilly mean it will work for you.
I took actos for awhile it worked great. I started gaining weight and retaining water. I was put on junivia, avandia, metformin and glyburide.I take all of these to keep my sugar down.
No, that is still on as well. As far as I know there have been no actual studies that show avandia is bad either, just metadata studies that are open to arguments.
My mom takes it and it makes her nuts. It does help her in her control, but it caused her to gain weight. So her visits to the doctor were always bitter sweet. Now, she has gotten such good control, that she is off the Actos and she has lost 24 pounds. So it does have it's drawbacks. Her levels are better than ever and so the doctor is comfortable keeping her off it.
Thank-you Gabby..it would seem that weight gain is one of the side effects of this drug..so I am thinking that is not much of a trade off for good numbers in the long run.
It's a possible side effect. For me I lost a couple of pounds on it and I know a few people who lost a few pounds as well. You will only know when you take it. It does take a couple of months to work fully too so you wont see immediate effects.
I have done, it did nothing much for me. It is a good drug for some people though and can help with blood sugar by increasing your insulin sensitivity and lipids by raising HDL and lowering triglycerides. Some people find it causes fluid retention and weight gain which is not a good thing. It's expensive and the manufacturer does an up to $50 mail in rebate if you ask your doctor for the slip or download one from the actos website. You can use them until they stop paying out so it does make it more affordable.

I use actos It keeps my numbers down very low. 131 this morning. Never higher than 150 during the day.

I thought it was taken off the market
No, there have never been any studies that show actos is dangerous
No,not Actos. I think Avandia was taken off.
