For the last year I have a compulsion to eat (carbs) between the hours of 10P.M. and bedtime. I seem to be driven to eat dispite the fact that I'm not necessarally hungry. After dinner I resolve not to eat again but too often I do. My weight is like a yo yo. I keep loosing the same 8 lbs. over and over, not to mention how it effectc my b.s. levels. Has anyone heard of the effects of rigorous exercise on Diabetics. I do Cardio and weight training 6 days a week.Could this contribute to my problem? Suggestions, comments please.Thank you.

Just a thought

I can’t offer any help, just my understanding. My husband eats after dinner also, mostly ice-cream. He even gets up and eats in the middle of the night. It’s hard for me to understand that because I don’t have that compulsion, and I’m not diabetic. I believe he must be hungry, or at least think he is. We both know it’s not good for him, but he can’t stop. We will be following this discussion.

He must stop doing this. Sometimes you have got to address the consequences of not taking care of yourself when a diabetic. I have been a type one diabetic for 55 years. We watch our blood sugars so as to prevent blindness, infections, etc. I have seen teenagers going blind because of following a free diet. A diabetic must live each day as if he were going to die tomorrow. Diet is so important.

Rale Trail, You are absolutely correct. What you say about diet, eating is right on. Sometimes ,I guess,I jist give in rather than do what has been suggested on DC. Thanks Pete

If you're eating when you know you're not hungry, it sounds like you're eating for emotional reasons. That might be boredom as Judy suggested. Or it might be other reasons.

There are some great books out there that deal with this issue. Check out some of these links. You might even be able to find books on this topic at your library.

Thank you John. I do have a number of issues I'm trying to deal with plus I'm taking meds for depression. Boredom may also contribute. as I stay on my diet from breakfast until 9pm probably because I'm quite active. I will also check out your references T Y Pete

John, last night I saw a program about Obsessvve compulsive behavor .Each of the 2 therapists spoke of a prosess termed Explosion or Exposure. This refers to allowing yourself to esperience the discomfort associated with ones issue-for me the excessive eating a night. I'm going to try this as I know I have OCD traits. Let all of you know what happens. Be back soon. Pete

Love these site John. Hopefully my head will swallow up these concepts beside me swallowing up food late at night. My problem is I think I don't eat breakfast. That is something I have to teach myself to do.........Debe

Prior to dx I was eating a lot between 7PM and 11PM, but also not eating breakfast most days, not a very good lunch which was usually something from Burger Thing.

Dinners were almost always good as we usually cooked something up but afterwards look out. snack attack and junk food until the lights went out.

I was (not) dealing with depression and would watch the tube and eat junk indiscriminately. I have lots of hobbies but had no energy anymore to do them.

Just changing my eating patterns, a good breakfast, and lunch with heatlthy snacks made a difference right away,

I'll swear by fiber as it keeps me feeling full and not wanting to eat extra most of the time. I think that adding the B complex helped and the diet changes put my Potassium and D3 back in the healthy range. All in all energy levels are good now.

I still snack during tv time but they are healthier snacks.

P2putt replied May 30, 2009 11:25 AM

T.Y. An increase in fiber may be helpful.as I don't eat much of it.

My deal in the evenings is that if I am working or at the computer or doing something constructive, I don't tend to snack. BUT, if I am watching a movie with the family...boy, I have the same problem. I am trying really hard now to just take a "right portion" snack with me to the room, and that is all I get. If I can get to where I am involved in the show, then I usually can distract my "snacking monkey". LOL

TV is also my cross. After a busy day and a healthy dinner I park myself in front of the tube.I'll try the computer between 8 and 11.Thank you. Pete

I dunno what kind of medication you taken but that also can play an effect. I take a heck a lot of phsch meds and at first I use to get up in the night and pig out BAD! But now somehow its not so bad...not sure IF they got the right combo, different meds caused it, etc. but I really believe those meds caused a lot of that. Just a thought. I mean I would even wake from my sleep and eat. ulgh. Now, I am fully awake and just eat usually evenings and its carbs..ulgh that's my huge problem now. I dunno though, good luck! *Hugs* Sheila

Thank you. I'lldiscuss this with my Doc. There seems to be so many factors that can effect us and I always think it is my fault that things go badly.Thank you again:)

I agree with you, that I think it is the medications that cause those late night snack runs. I'm trying to buy some healthier snacks since I can't seem to stop this nighttime runaway train of eating.

What are your numbers (BS) like? I almost always have a snack about 10 - carb/protein - if my 2hr. no. is 120 or under. If I don't my fasting skyrockets. Could it be your body telling you that you need a little something to get you through the night?

P2putt replied May 31, 2009 1:03 PM

Thank you, Mom and Boys. I'll check those numbers.Try that snack, not go wild.

When I get bit by the snack monster at night, I tend to go for popcorn. Its crunchy, tastes good, and I can eat quite a bit of it as a serving. Fills me up and keeps me from going back and forth to the kitchen for one empty filler after another. Hope you can get it figured out. Thanks for starting this post though, its nice to know I am not the only one who is still hungry at the end of the day!

P2putt replied June 1, 2009 11:10 PM

Thank u 4 your suggestions. I do like popcorn .Thanks again. Pete

NormaJean replied June 17, 2009 11:56 PM

I am a sucker for eating in the night mostly sweet stuff...not forgettin ice cream,I had started putting on weight but it bothers my back so I had to lose the extra weight.I started eating popcorn in the night and some fruit, then I'd take my pill,my numbers weren't too bad in the mornin. My advice to the night snackers try to eat healthy snacks that way you wo't be hungry and you'll have good numbers.

No help from me on this because I am going through the same thing too.

muffin2466 replied June 3, 2009 2:22 PM

I have the same thing at night. When my sugar level is ok then I seem not to do it. My big problem is not eating breakfast or lunch. For some reason I am not hungry. I know this is wrong because spiking is not good when I do eat. I can imagine that being on the internet at night when you want to snack may help take your mind off of eating.

Hi Pete,

I've heard that it does matter when you do your exercise as to weather or not it affects your sleep pattern... My nutritional person helped me to stop craving carbs in he late evening by suggesting I eat my last meal of the day by six pm... then snack on one half of a hard boiled egg around nine pm... omg... it worked the first night... I did this routine for a couple weeks, then only needed to do it once or twice a week... I rarely need to depend on a half/boiled egg now... but when I get the the late night munchies... I do the boiled egg remedy... it never fails me... She said, that I was craving protein... anyway... I made it a point to look closely at my regular meal plan and make sure I am getting a variety of nutrition... cheery servings and find company to share a meal with at least a few times each week... we are social animals, and food is more than just fuel... we need pretty food and happy friendships in order to thrive... I have my evening snack around nine... and find the sandman around eleven... I found that not having the tv on at least an hour before bedtime really helps... because of those terible commercials for late night eating act subliminally on us... I mute them anytime they come on... I most often meditate for at least fifteen minutes before going to bed... This works for me... maybe it's worth a try... everyone is unique... good luck in finding yours... Jocelyn

Hello again.Read your reply to my Late Night Eating Discussion.Thank you for your suggestions. A few comments: I hate commericals. When They are on I always hit the mute button;I do like boiled eggs and keeping late hours is dangerous to me as I typically "EAT" and it's usauully carbs. BAD,BAD.I'm going to try the boiled egg approach. :) The Wabbit Monster.

Jocelyn replied June 5, 2009 2:50 PM

hi u silwee wabbit, let me know if this works for you.... everyone's chemistry is different... but a couple of my friends have used it successfully too, so maybe it will help... If this doesn't have the desired affect, try getting Mrs Wabbit to be your Elmer Fudd, and chase you down the Wabbit hole... lmao.....

Sometimes we do get off track, don't we. But is it really off track? I don't think so. Because stress can make numbers raise, right? Well a little humor, makes you laugh and enjoy, even more! Taking away some stress, if not for a little while. Love it!
Like you said Jocelyn, love rofl, lol, lmao, such a mood booster!

late night eating is a plague
looking for one lonely boiled egg
I'd rather have a chocolate bar
cookies or a piece of cake
or ham and cheese with mayO on bread
but No,
I'm finding snacks diabetes approved
so sleep and energy I won't lose...
so I can win against disease
and live to be a ripe ol' geez
with wrinkled old raisin face
sliding into life's home plate
all used up at heaven's gate...
who knows maybe they'll be serving
cake... silly diabetes poems by Jocelyn
