If you have problems with metformin then you will have the same ones with Janumet, it's a combo pill of Januvia and metformin. There is no other drug currently that does the same thing as Januvia although there are several ones in the pipeline and one undergoing FDA approval. I'm not convinced the class is safe but they do help with blood sugar. Byetta would be the closest alternative to Januvia but that has it's own problems with nausea.

Janumet will not upset your stomach like the Metformin does. It does contain Metformin but not enough to upset your stomach. I know many people that has a upset stomach taking Metformin that take Janumet with no problem.
It is best to call your insurance. It is not on my Insurance's list either but they do cover it. Some people who thought there insurance would not cover it will just need a form filled out from there doctor that they have used other medications without success and then your Insurance Company will approve it. Also it is manufactured by Merck who has a program to cover the cost of their prescriptions for those whose Insurance company will not pay for it or have no Insurance at all. http://www.merck.com/merckhelps/

It depends which one you take. Janumet 50/500 will give you 1000mg of metformin a day. Janumet 50/1000 will give you 2000mg of metformin a day. You would have to compare that to how much metformin you originally took. It's possible for janumet to contain less metformin but also possible for it to contain the same amount or more.

My copay w/Blue Cross is $100 for 90 Days of Januvia. Janumet is $100 for a 30 day supply. It is cheaper to take two pills (Januvia/Metformin) than to take Janumet, which is chemically the same thing.

Have you tried asking your insurance provider what meds they do cover? Or maybe you should discuss it with your dr. Is there any way that he/she could give you samples of Janumet?
