swine flu

with the upcommming flu season I was planning on getting vaccinated for this but than came across a rather disturbing video on it not being very safe ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56wuIgJGvrM&fe... ) unsure if i should get it or not. than unsure how much truth there is to this video.. Is anyone else planning on getting this vaccine?

I don't know if they have developed a vaccine or not. However, when I had my dr's appt. last week, I asked her about any outbreak in my area. (Pt.Pleasant,WV, very small town) She said that here for me not to worry because there had not been any reported cases, but if I should start feeling as if I were getting ill with flu like symptoms, to make sure I got either in touch with her, or go to the ER. Haven't had any problems, but was concerned about what was going on in my area.

We have had an outbreak of swine flu here in KY. They don't seem that concerned about it. It's hard to get any info on it and what is going on.

It's here in GA too, but it's all over the news. Of course the CDC is here too. I just pray it turns out to be much less of a deal than it possibly could be.

Lady Di, you are somewhat correct that politics somewhat don't belong here, but in reality, everyone's eyes ARE on him, for guidance, and assurance, no matter the issue. But I do agree with you that another discussion should be made, if someone wants to, to discuss such a subject. But then again, if begun, it would be said that since it is not diabetic related, it should be squashed. Ho hum.

My point exactly. This site is no place for those type comments. And I still say it hasn't been proven that he's not qualified to be our President. And who makes that call? Who on this site has the knowledge or the expertise or the ability to look into the future to make that call? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to make a blanket statement as if it's a proven fact is just ridiculous.

I guess you didn't notice that I said "in my opinion" after my statement. I make no apology for my statement, as I believe that the junior senator from Illinois was persuaded first by the media and then by his ego to run for the presidency. He has already made it all too apparent that he should have waited a few more years before running for this office. He may become a great president, or he may fall on his face. Only time will tell, but he has already said that there are 58 states, he wished the president of Mexico a "happy fifth of fourth" (sic)Cinco de Quatro, instead of Cinco de Mayo, and he can't seem to talk without the help of a teleprompter. Of course, these are just minor gaffs, but he should have better control of his comments, which just confirms my assessment of his lack of maturity and statesmanship. No leader of any country should supine himself to the leader of another country, no matter what the religious or political significance.

If our "dear Leader" will make these kind of mistakes when the stakes aren't very high, what kind of mistakes will he make when his feet are really held to the fire?

My glucose spikes when I discuss political issues. Is there anyone else that has these sugar spikes when they are stressed? Just curious!

I'm just catching up on all of these comments and find them very interesting, to say the least. Are the drug companies behind this? Is this all just media hype? Are we all being duped? None of us know the answer, unfortunately. I do think that no matter what the President, the media, the medical profession or the drug companies do, there will be critics. If they did nothing and it got out of control, etc., what would we all be thinking/saying? Do a certain number of people have to die before any action is taken? I personally believe in being proactive and prepared. I do not think panic and exaggeration is in order, but we do need to be looking at this realistically.

I am a volunteer in a ministry that serves the needy. We are inundated with people needing assistance, and a large percentage are from other countries - particularly hispanics. We are not closing down, nor are we going into panic mode, but we have taken measure to address the issue, putting in place sensible, routine procedures and thinking ahead to the "what if" scenarios. I see other groups and organizations doing the same. I think we owe it to ourselves and our families, and those coming to us for help, to be aware of what is happening and doing all we can to provide sensible protection to the extent possible.

I am always puzzled when people have to bring politics into any and all situations too, I might add. To use this forum to say that President Obama is not qualified to be in office has no place here, in my opinion. That has not been proven, and I am not sure why people consider themselves such experts on the subject. IMO.

So far they have not created a vaccine but they have found strain that is causing the flu so they can work on it, However, it will not be available for some time. The flu vaccine that we get in the early fall does NOT cover this particular strain. I believe we will not see a pandemic because it really is nsot spreading any faster than other strains of flu..thousands die each year from "regular" flu! I believe that we should be careful of course but we can't hide ourselves in a bubble!!

don't panic.be cautious.current vaccine does not help.there may be more cases of swine flu but all strains of the flu should be a concern.keep up with personal hygiene and all should be fine.tom.

You need to first know the truth about adjuvant-based vaccines and now what the drug companies advertise or tell the public through the media. Adjuvant-based vaccines means something is added to boost the immune system, because the vaccine is not very effective it at all. For the most part, you can take elderberry extract which is natural and get better immune support and antiviral protection then a vaccine.

However, it's not a swine flu pandemic, yet! It is a media pandemic! It is also, a fully organized plan with a set purpose. What I believe is happening is man-made and is being implemented is such a way that we are paying for it not only with our money, but with our minds and health. We are being mind controlled by what we are currently hearing and seeing in the media, with their so called (bought and paid for) experts and commentators. Even the president has been duped by his agencies and advisers, or there may be something else is going on behind the scene that needs to be uncovered.

This flu out-break is a launch platform for more drugs to be made by drug companies and purchased by us, even if we don't take their drugs we still pay for them with our tax money. The drug industry was looking for many new drugs to come out of the DNA mapping and that didn't happen. Many of their patents are running out, so they need to generate more sales, from something they currently have or from something they will artificially create by adding adjuvant or I as I call it… junk. What would you do to make a billion or trillion dollars? If you can imagine it, you can bet they are doing it and more.

However, there is something more sinister afoot… The threat of an epidemic becoming a world-wide pandemic will put the global elitists in a situation where they can make it law for the world, "The WORLD" to be forced into taking some kind of protective medicine that is being conjured up by the drug companies. Under the current climate, the only way to benefit from this mess is to buy their stocks now… and you can cash in on the next flu season, just like the drug companies.

I hope you are not correct, but I have no evidence to not believe your theory! While I waffle with my feet planted slightly left of middle, I often listen to talk radio to hear what is going on farther to the right. I hope that both sides will see the absurdity of their opinions.

I don't want to sound too overly conservative, but our new president is easily duped. The media duped him into running for an office he is clearly not qualified for. IMO

I just read your reply AFTER writing my own and I did not know about the Novartis vaccine. Hoever it is a real travesty that gets perpetuated on the American public!

I have heard that the flu shots won't help with the Swine Flu. A vacination is in the works but won't be availabe for 6 months.

No one has developed a vaccine for it yet because it has to go through the first cycle of it's life. Meaning it is not the first attack that anything will happen towards making a vaccine, only when it goes dormant and the Pharmaceuticals have some time to observe it, will they have one. Plus there is a danger of it mutating, so we all just have to wait it out and see what happens.

No. They have not. As of a couple of days ago they thought there was no need to have at this time.

I have heard that the yearly flu shot will not help. There are 2 perscription drugs that help some when you think you are setting the flu.

I heard on NPR from a representative of CDC this Saturday morning (May 2) that over 36,000 people die annually from "regular strains" of the flu, and that, furthermore, Mexico was downgrading the number of confirmed cases of swine flu. You all know how many deaths there have been from Swine flu so far. The 24-hour press had, as is its fashion, hyper-reported this event, in my opinion, an we, the public, over-reacted.

We diabetics, due to our compromised immune systems, should always follow these Infection Control practices (hospital workers and anyone employed in the foodservice industry receive ongoing trraining as part of the accreditation process. WASH YOUR HANDS after going to the bathroom, touching your face, sneezing, touching your hair, or blowing your nose, or entering the kitchen (or patient's room). LAther for 20 seconds.

I always say to the public, "Throw away the kitchen sponge. Sponges are never used in institutional kitchens. They are not sold in restuarant supply businesses. We use what are called BAR TOWELS. These are stored in a bucket of bleach water (2 tablespoons bleach per gallon of water) between use, and the solution is remade when dirty." I know there has been talk about microwaving sponges but most kitchens I have worked in do not have microwave ovens (except in employee lounges).

Besides washing our hands, we need to get enough rest, eat correctly, and don't stress or panic (too much).

And, get your regular flu shot if your doc advises it.

This has turned out to be pretty much a joke. Not to say that the loss of life is ever a joke, but far more people die from the everyday strains we face each winter. It is just so blown out of perportion. It is good to pay attention, but don't panic or even really get too bent out of shape. I know that a pandemic is coming, it is just a matter of time. I don't believe this is even close. I bet it is just the pharmacutical companies needing to drum up a little income.

no the current shot will not help.just wash your hands stay away from crowds put the alcohal swabs or the bottle of disinfectant in your pocket put it on when you have gone shopping. in fall i wear gloves.

I read yesterday they think the worst is over. I don't know if I should believe it or not. I live in Arizona really close to the Mexican border. A friend was told if any one comes in with even a sniffle the plant will be closed. They manufacture baby products and are not willing to take a chance. Eveyone here is taking it in stride. Hang in there everyone we will get through this.

I got a call yesterday afternoon from the school district that one child in the high school was at school & was showing symptoms of flu. They are following what the CDC instructed & shut down the school thru Monday until they get results from the tests. If it is the swine flu, they will shut down the schools for 2 weeks & sanitize the school before they let the kids back. I am worried about my niece as she has fibro.,is a teenager & not consistent about washing her hands or not taking a "bite" & sharing each other's food.

Right now it is not a big thing in my part of Georgia. However, I try to keep my teen from sharing drinks and food with friends. I have tried to explain not only about the flu but other bugs that can be picked up. I hope your niece's school is not found to have the swine flu.

It was a falso alarm & the kids were sent back to school today (thank goodness). The boy was real sick, but just didn't turn out to be the flu. I think all the announcements about washing your hands all the time & not sharing each other's food might be getting through to the kids though. I gave my niece a small hand sanitizer to put in her purse as she was headed out the door and she even said thanks & didn't even roll her eyes! lol

i hope all escape this flu. not sure if i want the vacination when it is ready because of the nerve damage it gave some people the last time they made it.dont need to have extra problems i will take my chances keep washing my hand and use the alcohal wipes after i leave a store or any where. all so i use gloves in fall in winter when i go shoping helps.

If it takes up to 9 months to develop a vaccine, why are they talking about preparing for phase 5 where mandatory vaccination would be implemented? They don't even have a vaccine to cover this, shoot, they are not even sure of what they have. I would not get a vaccination…protect yourself with the CDC recommendations. I would not trust a vaccine this close to the outbreak.

I know none of the cases here in the US have been fatal, or even close, as our strain seems to be a very mild one. The problem is that this is a combined virus that contains strains that include avian, swine and human. Thus the transfer from human to human. Though it usually has to start with direct contact with pigs. CDC has published some easy to follow steps to reduce your risk for getting it.

Because of the pig involvement with this disease, the Egyptian gov't has decided to kill every pig in that country: approx 300,000. I think this is absolutely incredible, and horrible, to say the least! It has not been determined one way or the other that contact with pigs has anything top do with this disease.

They've had a vaccine for it for over 30 years and there have been outbreaks before. You may have even been vaccinated against it if you had a flu vaccination in 1976. It's just been such a minor strain that it's never been included in the regular vaccine since then. There are a few cases in the US every year but nothing significant. From what I understand they are going to put the strain in the 09/10 flu vaccine and if it becomes a big issue soon they will start to offer a vaccine for swine flu.

Oh, Tamiflu and Relenza seem to be pretty good as treatments for this strain.

True, but word on the CDC street is that while it wont be an effective vaccine people who had it may be slightly better off than those who didn't.

Tamiflu and the other influenza drugs can only be given in the first 48 hours of the illness. I am in day 6 today so I couldn't have it, lots of possible side effects.

The CDC is only allowing testing on people that have been to Mexico, Southern CA, or Texas in the 7 days before they became sick or where with people that are sick that were there. They are overwhelmed with testing my doctor said today. I was in CA but mostly in the north but through many questions and answers today he feels (and I agree) that I got this during my long flights and long layovers in the airports on Monday 4/20. People get sick 24-48 hours after exposure and that's exactly what happened to me.. Home Monday night, sick on Wednesday. While we don't know if it's Swine flu because of the limits on testing, they are treating me as if it is, mask, isolation at the doctor's office, no work until next week and a direct line to my doc if the chest congestion gets worse. Don't have pneumonia yet that's good, I'm not sure I like the yet in his statement though.

I was in the army stationed at Ft Bragg.NC back in 76 when the first swine flu outbreak came. They made us take the new,untested vacine. It was this is a direct order, get the shot or go to the stockade. I took the shot. That night I had the most awful reaction. I was lyingin bed not feeling too good when the ceiling and walls started colapsing in on me. But as I understand it, there were several deaths from that vacine too. Just another case where the govt uses our military as guinea pigs. Im currently fighting to get a VA disability for the Nerve Agent Pre Treatment Pill they made me take during Desert Shield back in 90. It was another untested drug the army thought would help us build up an immunity to nerve gas. The govt just recently finally admitted that there was such a pill given to us Gulf War soldiers and have allowed claims for damages. I got a twitch in my left eye, breathing difficulties, and lost the feeling in my finger tips. I now have a breathing problem they are calling asthma but what it is is that my automatic breathing thing stops and I have to tell myself to breath. Tell me thats asthma. they even tried to say it was sleep apnea. I said how can it be sleep apnea when Im awake when it happens? I dont know if you heard, but I only heard it once, on the news but this flu is a mix if regular flu - bird flu - an swine flu- an they have come up with a couple of ways it could have gotten mixed, but this does not sound like a thing that nature would do…an it comes right after all the tea partys that happened across the usa.. that means no more large groups of people, for they will be afraid of getting the new flu. this maybe a downer, but i remember getting all those shots just like you did,,,for other things, anyway hang jack an I will think of you,, hope every thing works out…pat

I think the drug you were given for Nerve Agent Pre-Treatment was a drug used to treat Myesthenia Gravis called pyridostigmine bromide, or Mestinon. It is an acetylcholine esterase inhibitor and it functions to lessen the severity of muscle weakness that people afflicted with this disease suffer from. The reason it works for nerve gas is the same reason it works for MG patients. I hope that there is someone on this thread that can explain it better than I can, so I will leave that duty to them.
I was given this drug for the treatment of constipation caused by the narcotics I have to take for the treatment of my chronic pain. The drug helps retain the water that is lost in the gut as a result of narcotics. It actually works, too. I had horrible constipation until I started using this stuff. I used it for several years until I stopped due to a geographical moved caused me to have to switch my pain management doctor, The new doc suggested I stop using the stuff because of the adverse side affects that you now suffer from. I guess I dodged that bullet because I don't have any negative long term side affects from using the stuff for as long as I did.
I just thought I would mention this to you for your information, as I don't think I added anything constructive to this thread.

I called my dr on Friday and was told not to worry about it. They had just got the notification and there was not a vaccine.

Good Morning, No the annual flu shots DO NOT protect you from this. They have started developing a vaccine for this strain but it will be months or years until they have one.

I am going to the doctor today to be checked for this as I just returned from CA last week and have had the flu since last Wed. :( Scary stuff.
