Pregnancy and T1 diabetes

Hi there, I get newsletters all the time in emails from different sites about diabetes and various issues involved with diabetes. Today I received one about Pregnancy and Diabetes that I though might have some information you could use or give you idea's of what to ask your doctor. Here is the URL for it:

I got gestational diabetes when I was 7 months pregnant with my daughter. That was my first experience with diabetes. I don't know if I can help you, but one thing I do know, if you have diabetes, and don't attend to it, the chances of having a sickly, fat baby are greater than if you don't. I hate using the word 'fat', but that's what the doc used with me. Obviously, you can't inject in your tummy, so the arms and legs get alot of injections. Let me know if this helped at all!! Just an FYI … I did inject into my tummy in the beginning. When my belly got too big and stretched out - somewhere around the thrid trimenster I quit - moved to the arms and legs.

I was gestational for 2 pregnancies, started shots at 20 wks for one and 10 wks for the other. Tight, thight control is the key. Good luck!

I haven't had children yet, but I will start my family in the next couple of years. I have had diabetes since the time I was 11 years old, so I've had it for 15 years now and done a lot of thinking concerning pregnancy and diabetes.

First of all, with diabetes, you'll probably want to get a high risk OBGYN. You'll also want to stay in constant communications with your diabetic doctor, before and after getting pregnant. You should have good control of your levels before getting pregnant — if you can't control it without the pregnancy and hormones, its going to be very hard to control it with the pregnancy. Discuss with your diabetic doctor what constitutes good control for you.

I have known diabetics who have had their own children. They are limited in number and have to be extra careful — poor control of your diabetes can not only affect you, but your child as well. Steel Magnolias was filmed many years back at a time when diabetes was still a mystery on many levels. Don't let that scare you off.

Another thing you may consider is checking with your insurance about a CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System) during pregnancy. While my insurance doesn't pay for one all the time, I have been told that they will cover one through a pregnancy to help keep control tight and danger to you and the baby down.

The long and the short? From all I've learned, its doable, and is done all the time — you just have to be more careful than a person without a chronic illness. Good luck!

Ditto on all of the above. Also the chances of having congenital anomalies increases with uncontrolled diabetes. the operative word here is uncontrolled. Keep your sugars in control before and during pregnancy and you should have not problems.

I have not had this experience, I do know that my doctor's told me (I'm a Type 2 diagnosed when my daughter was 9mo old) that with my age, and being a diabetic he would warn against me having any more children, it was a simple decision for us though as we were not planning to have any more children, I was 32 at the time.
I wish you the best of luck there is no greater gift than a child, however in your case I would talk to all the healthcare professionals I could, get all the information available before making that decision. May I ask why they say you would need fertility drugs? Are they saying diabetes has made you infertile?

Thanks for your reply. I have not really been active here for awhile i was down in health and my sugars have been acting up a lot lately.
