It has quite a few years for me, but when I was pregnant with my second child, I had gestational diabetes also. My doctor told me the same as yours did.

Last edited 9 months ago I too, developed gestational diabetes with my second and third pregnancies and now am diabetic also. So, far I am managing with diet. Although there are those days! I pay particular attention to the carbs in the food I buy and try to cook as much as I can with fresh vegetables and meat. I avoid potatoes and bread, which is extremely difficult for me!!! I eat a lot of cheese, yogurt, low fat jello, skim milk and fruits. Although, I am very careful about what fruits I do eat and how much. I enjoy banana's and really "free food'". Raw vegetables are good also.

I think getting it back has, in a roundabout odd way, helped me to live better. I eat better, despite my love of Pop Tarts and brownies, lol. I too have thyroid problems, hypothyroidism.

I was gestational with my 2 sons, the first 19yrs ago last month and the other 10yrs ago last August, with our daughter (age 7 now) no gestational at all, She was born in July 01 and March 02 I was diagnosed Type 2, I'm a 5th generation and the youngest to ever have it, Laura's case is a bit different she suffered auto-immune failure which took her Thyroid in Sept 08 and it was just confirmed by a second Ped Endo on the 6th of this month she is Type 2 leading to Type 1, the doctor put her as a Type 1 1/2 in her records because she can go either way. She was NOT the child I would have thought would have gotten it but my other kids do random BG level just in case. |

This is what happened to me also. I had three pregnancies, was gestational with two of them and had to do insulin and the whole nine yards. I am now a type one also. The experience with them helped me a great deal. At least the information I received then gave me a head start. I hope the same is true for you. If you have any questions or concerns, this is the place to voice them. There are many with a significant amount of experience and knowledge and are more than willing to assist you in this new challenge.

I am the owner of DiabeticMommy.com and we have a fairly large forum.
Deleted User replied February 15, 2009 3:13 AM I was told when I was, I guess, rediagnosed, that I had drank my pancreas to death.
Jlynn replied March 25, 2009 11:37 AM i have shared this with some of my friends here in the past but again now..I was diagnosed w/type one during my second or third month of pregnancy. I had been sick for several months prior to the pregnancy and diagnosis ..my aic 18% and sgurs were well over 600's steadily...spent weeks in icu after initial diagnosis and 4 more times throughout the pregnancy. -as the preg. and hormones raise sugars as well-each time was not routine in my eyes I was terrified for the little person inside the "chaos" I met with dieticians and other professionals throughout my pregnancy. I was giving all of the, maybes and possiblies that my baby ccould be faced with due to my condition, our condition really. IT was little ease even after the amnio-tests, were all good, I still feared...

I was Gestational when I was pregnant with my daughter and the day she was born, it went away! My doctor advised me that it may return in 5 years. Unfortunately, he was right. I am now a Type 1 pumper. For her, it never materialized, but I do make sure she keeps and eye on what she eats, just in case.
