YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE! I only recently joined this group myself but have found it so helpful and the people here are great, we are all diabetics or caregivers for diabetics and the wealth of knowledge and support here is awesome!

Welcome to the group!!

Hugs & Luv,

Robin

roshy replied February 8, 2009 3:09 PM

awwwh !! thanks robin!! its crazy!! i have never done anything on the net like this before but im so glad i did!!

i thhink ill benefit alot with being able to talk to people with the same condition, theres not many, infact no support groups over here in ireland and im delighted i now have some people to share the same issues, problems, experiences with!!

so thanks very much for your warm friendly welcome!!

rbergman replied February 8, 2009 8:57 PM

Your very welcome, even though I live in the states, here where I live in South Dakota there are no support groups or classes anywhere nearby either, I have to travel a couple hours or more for that unfortunately but I get a lot of advice here and when I go to the doctor I ask a lot of questions based on what I learn here.

Welcome to Diabetic Connect Roshy. We are all here quite often and we'll be there for you when ever you need us. Diabetes is not an easy road but with a support group like this it will become easier and we'll help you find some humor as well.

Sit down, take a deep breath, and read all you want or post all you want.

Hello Roshy, welcome to our community! What are you studying in college? I was a mathematics teacher in a community college in New York for many years. I have been Type 1 for 63 years and I am very healthy. Once you have good control you will have a good chance of leading a long, healthy life. Good luck to you!

Richard

roshy replied February 8, 2009 6:50 PM

hi richard!!

firstly id like to congratulate you on all of your blogs, stories, shared experiences and advice you have posted up on the site!!! its great to see so many other people with diabetes live a life which is rich with happiness and health . . it gives hope and faith to alot of people like me!!

Im studying social care, and in the future i hope to work with people with mental health problems such as depression and addiction!

Im the youngest in a family of five, and out of us there is my dad and myself that have type one!!
i was 16 when i was diagnosed and been through the pits with this condition!!
Although the health system is pretty good over here i avoid goin to the doctor because its like going round in circles!! i found a good friend in my diatitian but no matter what advice she gives me theres just no changing the distructive patterns which ive adapted to !!

The time is moving on now and im terrified ill never change!! and knowing the effects diabetes can have when its not controlled juct scares me!!

but finding other people to talk to helps because it makes you realise that your not alone and all of "us" are dealing with the same hard and upsetting challenges!

Richard157 replied February 8, 2009 7:28 PM

Thanks Roshy! I had a student many years ago who visited Dublin and he said there are many people with the last name of Vaughn in the phone book there. Vaughn is a Celtic name and so I may be of Irish descent. Is it true that there are many Vaughns in Ireland?

roshy replied February 8, 2009 7:43 PM

yeah i suppose it is quite a popular name over here!! im looking it up in the phone book and theres about 80 to 90 different listings!!

Hi Roshy, We're all so happy to have you join us, as you can see by the warm messages. You definitely will find support on this site, along with very good information. so just join right in. I'm Irish, too, by the way - from the O'Dwyer clan. St. Patrick's Day is coming soon, and then EVERYONE will be Irish! (LOL)

Hope you're doing well with controlling your BS, and that you have a good doctor working with you. It's not always easy to stay focused and intent on doing the right thing where your diabetes is concerned, but you definitely do not want any of the complications that can result from not doing so. So keep hanging in there and working at it.

Ask questions. Share your thoughts and opinions and any information you might have or come across. Have a great rest of the day!

Hi Roshy,

You asked for one pen pal and by my count you have now got about 15,000. Everyone of us on this site are connected by diabetes. We either have it, we have someone in our care that has it, or we are health care providers who are concerned about it.

Now that you have increased the size of your diabetic family by 15,000, I was just wondering what time do you want us over for dinner tonight?

-Ken

PS Just to let you know, no matter what the others say about me I am always very serious and hardly ever crack a joke.

roshy replied February 8, 2009 7:47 PM

highlandcitygirl replied February 8, 2009 7:53 PM

LadyDi replied February 8, 2009 7:48 PM

As you will see, we have some who will not face reality! If you ever need a laugh, you can certainly go to Ken. He cracks me up! You'll enjoy the snipes and tiffs between Ken and MaryS, too. They're a good comedy team.

We'll be waiting for that invite, by the way! No need to do anything too fancy. We all need to get away, and I think Ireland would be a lovely trip!

Hi Roshy
I would love to have an irish diabetic pen pal.
Yoy said you are studying to work with mental health problems. I have had the illness of depression since I was 15 years old, I am now 58 and still have it.
Your friend Cara

roshy replied February 8, 2009 8:45 PM

hi cara( pretty irish name by the way meaning friend but i say you already knew that!!)

yeah, ive being studying for three years now and ive worked with a range of different clients such as, drug and alcohol addicts, people with mental health such as depression, schitzaphrenia, young kids with self image issues and i had work experience with patients in hospitals with all types of physical and mental illnesses!!

i love the idea of working along side of some one and helping them to live and change their life in any way possible just so they can have a better day tomorrow!! i found from experience the smallest things can go the distance for someone like a friendly chat or smile!! depression is something that you can never empathise with until you suffer with it yourself. i hope you feel alot better now and coping ok !!!

You will have to share some exerpts from your finished work with us. We are all eager to hear about your topic.

roshy replied February 8, 2009 9:00 PM

well its actually not too late over here!! its exactly 9pm!! bu the thought of writing something so contraversal and detailed is killin me!!! eating scones and drinking tea while on the net is a much simplier and nicer option!!! : . )

Gabby replied February 8, 2009 9:38 PM

Actually, I am getting ready to go fix our supper. I got one of the recipes off the site here that I am going to be trying.

So starbucks has invaded Ireland? They are everywhere here and they are nice, but I can make a good cup of coffee and nice home baked brownies for myself (and they will be safe to put in my mouth, LOL!)...they are very expensive over here. Infact, our economy is getting so bad that many of them are closing. Maybe they are just getting transplanted. LOL!

roshy replied February 8, 2009 9:44 PM

starbucks is really expensive over here too!! but unlike every other irish person i dont waste my money on beer and vodka so i waste it on expensive coffee instead!!

mmm brownies!! do you use sweetner for them!! the net is great for getting tips and ideas!!

the economy is crashing here too, its a good time to be a student!! lol

Gabby replied February 9, 2009 2:55 AM

At least you have chosen a better vice. LOL
Sure you can make brownies without flour and with natural sugar substitues...rich and yummy. You can even add coffee to it! I have a recipe for a "thick as mud cake" that you should check out in our recipe section. It is soooooo moist. YUM

roshy replied February 9, 2009 3:04 AM

mmmmm, coffee and cake!!! now thats something amazing right there!!! god i feel so sorry for myself sometimes that i shouldnt eat this kinda food!! and i know with the right insulin ajustments i can eat it its just so sad that i have to feel so guilty over a piece of feckin cake!!! i wouldnt mind but i dont smoke, do drugs, drink!! the only thing id like is something tasty and i cant well shouldnt eat them!! and the consequences are so major!!
they re not jokin when they say life isnt fair!!

Gabby replied February 9, 2009 3:12 AM

Ah, but this recipe is friendly. Of course you can't eat the whole cake, but you can have a slice. It is so rich that you only want one anyway...give it a try. If you don't have the substitutes, let me know. We can try to find something you can use.

Please drop this crap. I don't come here to listen to a 21 hyper person. Chat rooms are availabe. Danielle O'Donnel, you have worn this out. This is a diabetic information chat, if you forgot!

LadyDi replied February 9, 2009 12:14 PM

Who is Danielle O'Donnell? This discussion probably has gone a little overboard, but if it is a legitimate post, then it is about living with diabetes. The site is here to support as well as inform, I think. There is a lot of "fluff" in the discussion, however. I have made the point a couple of times previously that there are other places for "chatting" (Facebook, email, IM, etc.). Still puzzled by the mention of Danielle.

well good morning there!!!

jesus do you feel a victim of your own negativity????

ive found this site for a reason, well many reasons actuallt!!

like any other type one i feel i have the right to search for other means of support, advice, friends with similar problems and issues!!!

Another reason why i like this site is because many of the users are older and therefore have much more knowlegde AND experience then i have!! The info on facebook i doubt will be as well educational or researched

and if you havnt notieced i kinda closed the conversation when i said thank you to all the users and good night

ya wont bring me down any time soon!!!

you dont like it then dont read it or waste your time writing back!!!

dan o d aint my style since he ruined a good cover of "act Naturley"

roshy replied February 9, 2009 2:40 PM

sorry audree!! my last comment wasnt for you it was for the anonymous person ahead of ya!!
i didnt mean to insult you!! i just feel like a site like this could be used to support type ones no matter what age, back round or personal issues they may have!! i shouldnt be laied off just because i have different needs as a diabetis!!

im here to learn too!!!

as for the bad apple!!

i think its only natural that some personalites clash but with my sense of humour i might mistakingly insult some people which is just not intended!! as i have al ready done with a danny o donnell fan!! i didnt think he had any in fairness!!! except for his mammy!! lol

but i think ill leave it up to you to tell me if i ever cross the line!!! you seem like a very level headed lady!!! your a great person to have around!!!

I think the fact that you had so many people jump on board to join your discussion just means that we all want to have some fun. It is rare to have one so filled with "real time" chat, and it is refreshing. Some of us old farts need a young'un to wake us up a bit.
You will have to share with us some exerpts from your paper...I am curious to learn about what you think on the topic.

roshy replied February 9, 2009 3:40 PM

well the real reason why i looked up the site was to get to know other people with diabetes!! and you cant get to know a person without talking to them in the first place!!!! you can learn soo much from listening to other peoples experiences!! and you can help others just by listening and giving your own opinon!!

as for the paper!! i doubt if anyone could make sense outta it! i was half dosed up on coffee and half dead in the chair while i was writing it!! but ill fill ya in on the result as soon as i get it back!!

So right now, you ARE a cup of coffee
LOL, sounds like some of my college days to be true. We would crank up the music and work thru the nite. It was fun when I was young...not so fun now. But every once in a while, I just gotta have an all nighter. I think it makes me fake myself into thinking I'm young. LOL.

Gabby replied February 9, 2009 5:59 PM

I am more fond of tea, but it was not until my trip to London that I had hot tea with cream...oh that was good.
I do like coffee too, and though I cannot abide it black or without some hint of flavoring...I have grown used to that pleasant smell of a pot brewing on a cold day.

roshy replied February 9, 2009 6:18 PM

before i was diagnosed i was a really big tea drinker, i used to sit down, switch on all the soaps and enjoy my cuppa with a nice chocolate biscuit!!!

then, when i couldnt have my biscuit i didnt want the tea!!! so i switched to coffee!!

but im happy to survive on both now!!! i dont use any of that coffee mate or stuff like that!! i use the low fat milk and coffee and ream is a treat i have every friday with my frined at lunch time!!! mmmm its beautiful!!

Perhaps the person who so 'bravely' posted that has issues with people getting along? or perhaps doesn't quite understand the meaning of the word SUPPORT?

Roshy,
I am part Irish also. I have French, dutch, scotch,Irish,English,German and Indian in me. I have been a Diabetic for almost 40 years. It does get easier as time goes on. There are more people out there with Diabeties than you can know even in your home Country. Next time you go to the Dr. ask if you can post this web site on thier board and then see how many people go there also. You may be surprised.
The best thing you can do for your Diabetes is to eat right and exercise daily that will help to keep the weight down and also keep your health up. I keep checking out different Diabetic sites and reading everything I can get my hands on when I am taking a break from Quilting. I apply what sounds like it will work for me and if not then I try something else. That is the way I have learned to live to the fullest with Diabetes.
WELCOME TO OUR CLUB OF DIABETICS. That is the way I look on this site as our Diabetic Club. There are so many people on here that always gives good sound advice. I hope it helps you in your quest to live better.

hi frustrated mom!

Thank you for repling! I can understand where your son is coming from!! i was 16 when i was diagnosed type one and i can completely relate to your frustration because my mom got very angry when i coudnt keep my diabetes under control! The most worriyng part for her was that she was helpless. Sometimes she got very frustrated when she found rappers of candy or chocolate and would turn the whole thing into a screamimg match!! This caused alot of damage because i learned to hide everything from her. Type one is such a hard condition to handle and as a teen it becomes the last thing you want to deal with or talk about.

I believe if i went to counciling around the time of being diagnosed it would of helped a great deal! but your son may object to this too!! But when he feels ready he will want to talk !!

If you need any advice id be happy to help!! as i feel like i have experienced all the ins and outs of beeing diagnosed as a teen!! trust me its a very hard , difficult lonely time and if you need and information or help id be glad to offer it to you!!

Thanks again!

Welcome to the site! I'd love to have someone to "chat" with about life and diabetes. I've been diabetic since I was 10 and I'm 29 now. Please feel free to message me here. I think you'll find many people here who have awesome advice - it's a fabulous community. Take care!

Hi Roshy,
Good on ya for taking the initiative and finding some people with diabetes. It took me about 13 years to do that. And I'm glad that you've inspired some humour - the posts brought a smile to my face.

So, I know a PWD in Dundalk - that's the closest I've gotten to connecting with Diabetics in Dublin. However, I know about 15 people with type 1 in Clare (that's where I live - you'd never have guessed:-) I run a support group for us!!!!

I'm 36 and have had diabetes for 16 years. I'm on MDI but awaiting the pump (still). I love to yap on and on about diabetes and I have learned so much in the last 6 years between the internet and meeting others. Plus, 2 years ago I found a brill endo. I don't see a dietician because, well that's another story. I'm trying to get my HbA1c down to 6.5% so I can maybe think about having a third baby (I'm a gluten for punishment). Everyday, I threaten to give my 3 year old away but then he turns around and sings "the bearnessities" from the Jungle Book :-)

Anyway, if you have room in there for someone a bit closer to home I'll be your penpal too. You can't really beat the "Yanks" though - I even married one.

Take care and stay connected,
Grainne.

I can't get my bs under control and I just lost my sister who had it for 22 years. She was the most active and lively person that I ever new and I miss her. sorry about going on about myself. I hope you enjoy yourself and have a long good life.

Saphire, I am sooooo sorry to hear about your sister. How are you holding up? Message me if you need to talk.
