I was told by my Dr. 140 to 160 is a good number 2 hours after eating.

highlandcitygirl replied January 24, 2009 10:44 PM

thank you so very much! guess i'm doing alright.

LadyDi replied January 25, 2009 12:47 AM

That's what I've been told as well. It depends on what and how much you eat, but if you're eating properly that should be the range about 2 hrs. after a meal.

Kevin L replied January 25, 2009 10:48 PM

My doctor told me anything under 140 is good. i guess it all depends on the doctor(or the patient).

My doctor said anything 150 and under would be great. And I have found that if I eat several small meals a day I can keep my numbers on even scale throughtout the day, no ups and down. But we all slip and sometimes my small meals are too big.

My Dr. said 2 hours after eating 140-180 is good. After taking the byetta though it usually drops low.

highlandcitygirl replied January 25, 2009 11:11 PM

to tell you the truth, i don't know what to do for myself anymore. i am miserable!

2catty replied January 26, 2009 1:43 AM

What are your sugars running. Are they running to high.

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 2:38 AM

they were 132 this morniing before eating, 99 two hours after lunch then before supper tonight
,they were 160

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 2:40 AM

i forgot to say when i went to bed last night, they were 120

2catty replied January 26, 2009 5:55 AM

That's not bad at all. The only concern is you pre dinner sugar. I would keep on keeping track of that and see if it is that was every evening before dinner. They might be a pattern. You don't take meds right now for it do you. You might need to take your logs to your Dr. and discuss foods and meds. You might need meds especially before dinner. Let me know how it goes. Your friend Cat

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 4:04 PM

no i don't take diabetes meds now. i did at one time. i am learning what i should have learned five years ago!

2catty replied January 26, 2009 9:11 PM

You might want to discuss your evening sugars with your Dr. I hope you don't have to take meds but it might be possible. Let me know how it goes.

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 9:20 PM

it was 136 when i got up this morning, two hours after eating, it was 196

2catty replied January 27, 2009 12:05 AM

Kc is right. Those aren't pre-diabetes numbers. I would contact your Dr. tomorrow and let him know what's going on before it starts affecting you in negative ways. Please keep us informed.

My doc says the same thing catty, anything over 180 is a no-no.

Depends on who you ask. Normal would usually be under 100, likely in the 80s and 90s with an occasional numbers higher possible. There is some evidence that damage is being done when post meal spikes are 140 or over. My personal goal is under 120 but I consider under 140 acceptable. Higher than that and I know I kneed to adjust the meal.

Unfortunately, the numbers you are posting are not reallypre-diabetic ones, they are in the diabetic range. A home meter isn't accurate enough to diagnose but what you have posted certainly merits additional testing, specifically and oral glucose tolerance test. To give you an idea, pre-diabetes is diagnosed with two fasting lab tests of 110-125 or a 140-200 2 hours after a 75g carb load on the OGTT. Diabetes is diagnosed with two fasting lab tests of 126 or higher, 200 2 hours after a 75g carb load on the OGTT or a random reading of 200 when accompanied by symptoms of diabetes such as excessive thirst.

Regarding the accuracy, that 196 you posted above would be classed as accurate if your blood sugar was in the range 165-245. More likely it would have been a lot narrower probably in the 179-215 range. Either way, you can see the predicament you face about pre-diabetes or diabetes.

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 9:40 PM

would that be excessive thirst, urinating a lot, and a bad hunger?

kdroberts replied January 26, 2009 9:46 PM

Yup.

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 9:47 PM

uh! oh! i think i got a problem!

kdroberts replied January 26, 2009 9:51 PM

Maybe. Those are the common symptoms. Other ones are blurred vision, dry skin (although tough to say during the winter) and fatigue. Common long term symptoms would be recurrent infections and poor wound healing.

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 9:55 PM

my skin is extremely dry, i always put that down to being 60 years old. here lately though, its starting to look like gator hide. i am so tired, that i don't have the energy to go for my walk. i did not know if diabetes was the cause or the rheumatic heart disease. i best make another doctors appointment! thank you so very much for you help!

2catty replied January 27, 2009 12:09 AM

Yeah I am worried about you. Make sure you go to the Dr. and take your numbers. You need some Lab work. You are explaining classic symptoms of diabetes not pre-diabetes. Get checked, please. That way you can control it before it controls you.

highlandcitygirl replied January 27, 2009 12:42 AM

now i better make an effort to write this stuff down. when i call him, they'll probably want me to come right in!

2catty replied January 27, 2009 1:47 AM

I hope so. I myself have to talk to mine tomorrow also. To see if I can change from Lantus to Levemir. Lantus has caused me to gain some weight. It is not for vanity, it is for my health. I am not used to the weight and it hurts my feet And I am not that big so if I keep gaining I will be totally miserable..

highlandcitygirl replied January 27, 2009 2:22 AM

yes, i know what you mean!

kdroberts replied January 27, 2009 2:26 AM

That might not help since they are both insulins and will have the same issue with weight gain. Additional Levemir has a slightly different profile to lantus so you may need to double dose and change the amounts.

2catty replied January 27, 2009 10:59 PM

Jeez! You know I take 180 units a day of Lantus. Any more Lantus in my body and I think it will replace my blood. LoL. I split the dose in two, morn and night. That's why I am hoping to get on Levemir. It also is not as prone to cause as much weight gain as Lantus. Studied up on that and talk to some nurses. Lyrica also causes weight gain. I take it to, I have been told to try Topomax instead.

My doctor told me around 140. I have found it best to keep what I call a diabetic journal which is: date, time, what your sugar level is,what you ate, and how you feel. If you do that, it is easier for the doctor to help you see where you should be at. I hope that helps some.

highlandcitygirl replied January 26, 2009 10:18 PM

i appreciate your imput. and thank goodness i have the numbers, but i need to write them down in a little book to take to the doctor! thank you!

jeanann1972 replied January 26, 2009 11:05 PM

Even though it runs in my family, I never thought that I would get it or that I would be prepared when I did. The best thing that I did was keep a diabetic journal. I kept it with my meter to make sure that I kept it up. It helped for me to see where I went wrong. It also helped the doctor to see where I was at and where I needed to be. It will never be easy, but it does become easier with time.

I manage my eating so that my two hour number is never over 120. Usually I am in the upper 90's. Avoiding the ups and downs of bg numbers is the best way to combat diabetes complications.

Ok according the what I have as guidelines....

Pre-Diabetes:
FASTING-100-125, AND
2HR AFTER MEAL OR 75G OGTT- <140 AaCE
conflicting results between the American Diabetes Association and the American Assoc. of Clinical Endocrinologists.

I hope this helps you some, these were just given to me on the 22nd by our daughters pediatric endocrinologist but they are not just child guidelines they are for all diabetics regardless of age as it was told to me.

Take Care,
Robin

thanks, i need all the help that i can get!

rbergman replied January 30, 2009 2:42 AM

for some reason it isn't letting me put in all the information i've re-edited this post several times
I hope you got what you needed basically 100-125 fasting if pre-diabetic and <180 after meals
But i should say that i agree with the other members each doctor has their own guidlines they seem to follow as well so answers will vary.

highlandcitygirl replied January 30, 2009 2:46 AM

yeah, then i've actually got it in the right range the past two days!

highlandcitygirl replied January 30, 2009 5:16 PM

thank you for the web page, very interesting. my numbers were back up this morning, i'm a yo yo!

grammypammy replied March 21, 2009 4:39 PM

When I went to the doctor after fasting, he said I was prediabetic. My number was 90. couple weeks later I went back, with no fasting. I had a cup of coffee, with no sugar, and 2 glasses water. My number was 97. The other day a lady who has one of those machines took my bs. It was 124. I had the usual and a carb free energy drink. She said she didn't know what the doctor was talking about and I'm fine. I'm confused. Can some one help me with this?

I follow very tight BG control through a low carb diet.. I never go over 120 two hours after eating. Most of the time I stay around 110. Even my one hour test is never over 120.

Yes I fine with what I dont eat isnt the fact that surar goes up to 170 at times,in my case its the stress I am under at the time that makes mine go up.The more stress the higher my numbers go up.Why does this happen,I do not know.My family do not help me much they try to but they eat sweet stuff in front of me but when I want some ,they say NO you are a Diabetic and tease me with it.I get upset then am I wrong for geting mad at them for doing that even in my own home they will do this.To me its like rubing it in because I have a servere illness. They laught at me and call me baby when I get upset or say I am being childish for it?! The highest my sugar ever gotten was 300 and I was moving again stressfull .Usally in the morning hours its between 110 to 125. I am classifield as Diabetic 2 have been since 2001......Marilyn

Momto3 replied April 18, 2009 4:24 PM

Marilyn, this sounds like cruel and unusual punishment! Your family should be your biggest support system and they definitely are not...how old are you anyway? Is this spouse and children acting like this or brothers and sisters? If you want to you can message to me and I will help to support you - it's not easy as I have 3 kids and a hubby who are all healthy - but are all very supportive...they say "Mommy - NO!" then we all laugh about it! Please do not give up on your own health - everyone here will help-just please keep posting!
Hope this helps! Marie

When I was diagnosed, this whole 'pre-diabetes' thing wasn't around. It really sounds strange to me, to tell you the truth. To me, either you are or you aren't diabetic. Sorry, I guess that is just the way it was when I was diagnosed.
