myrtle,
There is a new web site online that you can go to and learn just about anything about how to care for your diabetes. They have videos there and you can choose to look at the ones that you need information from. They even give you reward points for viewing them. Later you can trade those reward points in for free diabetic products. All you have to do is sign up. Many of the people who belong to this site also belong to that one too.
The site is called "Healthy Outcomes." Here is the link to it.

Good site, Avera. I just signed up and will go back and look it over better after while. I did look at one of the videos, and it's very well done. Thanks for the tip.

Take a list of questions with you. They should be willing to answer them, I would think. Never hurts to ask - nothing to lose. You might check with the hospitals or the health department to see if you could counsel with a dietician at little or no cost.

If you have diabetes, you're at increased risk of various bone and joint disorders. Factors such as nerve damage (neuropathy), circulation problems, muscle breakdown and obesity may contribute to these problems. Visit this page for more info.

There are really so many good past discussions that will help you tremendously. Looks like some are being brought forward again by Barb, and you can look in the menu of discussions on the left and select others that appear to be of interest to you.
There are also many good sites beside this one that contain volumes of info. Just "Google" diabetes, etc., and you'll find loads of great help. Especially at the American Diabetes Association website (www.diabetes.org).
If you have access to a library, there are many good books that will help you too.
I know it's overwhelming, but it's actually not that bad once you get more information and feel more comfortable with what you need to do. In any event, to be very general, just zero in on fruits & veggies, keep your carbs & sweets down and exercise (walk, be active) as much as possible. Watch proportions you are eating. That's very important. Good luck. Let us know how you're doing, and don't hesitate to ask questions if you don't understand something you read, etc.
Diane

I didn't mention it, but if you're interested in what books to either buy or check out, there are many recommended here on this site. You can also find them to your left, or on the right side of your profile page. A number of helpful articles from various sites are available from this site as well.

Go online to the American Diabetic Association. You can obtain testing supplies for free. Also they post diabetic diets.

The main thing you have to start doing is do not eat things that contain sugar.
Eat fresh fruit and vegetables. Stay away from fried and fatty foods. Eat baked, broiled, and boiled. Salads are very healthy. Watch your starches if you eat white bread change to wheat, or even white wheat. It is more wholesome and less starch. Get exercise. You can go to a site called The American Heart Association and print out healthy diets. They have more than just diets or the heart. They post low fat diets, low sugsr diets. If you drink soft drinks switch to diet. Use sugar substitute, equal I find to be the best. Relax, because stress has something to do with driving your sugar level up. Check your blood sugar frquently. You can get a free meter through some sites, I am not sure of them. When you recieve your meter you will get testing strips with it, but your doctor can write a script for more. -
