I've been Type 2 for a number of years, but must admit that I have not heard of this. What exactly does it contain? Is it for Types 1 & 2, for those who are in jeopardy of lapsing into a coma, those who are hypoglycemic? Interesting.

Debe Pendice replied December 10, 2008 4:56 AM It is an important therapy for hypoglycemia. It is given as a shot just like insulin. If your blood sugar level gets so low that you pass out or can't swallow, you will need a glucagon shot. If you take insulin, your family, friends, coworkers, and exercise partners should learn how to give you a shot of glucagon. When you need glucagon, you may not be able to give it yourself. As your MD about glucogan, because you need a perscription for it...Debe

I have one at home (I've never used it). Usually its expired for a couple of months before I realize I need to replace it.

Last edited 11 months ago I carry glucose tablets everywhere I go, but didn't know I should have Glucagon. Interesting. |

I have one at home, and I carry one with me. Because I have "hypoglycemic unawareness", I can't tell by symtoms if my blood sugar is too low anymore. I have had to use mine a couple of times. When I was at work, I had one there, too. I typed out instructions for its' use and taped them to it, then made everyone around me aware of its' existence and the signs to watch for that I may need them to use it.

I was on prednisone for over a year and that through me out of wack completely. Now being off that medication I seen to down out all the time, especially at nighttime.........Debe
Sparrow replied December 11, 2008 1:57 AM Actually, I'm still on Prednisone and apparently will be forever. So my blood sugars tend to run higher in the afternoons (when the prednisone is peaking). I'm on the pump, so I have it set to give me more insulin in the afternoons. Unhappily, sometimes I get active without knowing I'm going to ahead of time, so my sugar can bottom out. But I can remember standing and talking to some people and the next thing I knew, I didn't know where I was, who I was, or anything else. No warnings whatsoever. Thankfully, there was a pharmacist near by who knew what to do with the glucagon kit I carry with me.

I use to get the sweating, or shaking or the strange feeling, but I was able to get it before it went to low. Like you now, its like I feel funny and before I can react to the feeling I am down.........Debe

Usually if you need it you are already unable to use it on yourself. You can buy the tablets at any drugstore and they work great if you feel a low coming on. |

I carry on with me at all times even though I am type 2 and do not use insulin anymore. Being as active as I am, I do run the risk of a low that I won't feel coming on. I do get lows in the 30's but usualy feel them coming on and can eat or drink something to bring my levels back up.

jennifer replied December 11, 2008 2:22 AM i carry a kit in my purse, have one at home and at work. everyone knows where it is and how to use it. i have also held on to expired kits and they work very well in small doses when i am ill.

We have one, but my son fortunately is great about feeling lows coming on. So it's not something we think about much. We usually make sure we take it if we're going on a long trip where we may have any risk of getting stranded in the middle of no where. That's about the only time we really ever think about it. |

I, too have had one for many years. I once had a horrible low sugar event (28) and have made sure I keep one handy ever since. I have instructed my family members on how to use it and the conditions in which they would need to administer it. Also...I 'refresh' this with them whenever I get a new kit. I've never needed it, but it's good to know it's there if the situation should arise! |

Thank you for the reminder on this. I will be going on a trip in a couple of weeks and usually have the kit with me when I go. I completely forgot this time that my pen has expired. I've been running high so I doubt I'll need it but it's such a relief to know that it's there. I've gone as low as 20 without realizing. There one minute gone the next. My whole family has been trained on how to use it. Definately a "must have" if you run dramatically low. |

My son has one at home,school,in the car,and i keep one in our bedroom.We have had to use it 3 times with him.I make sure we always have enough. |

AaronS replied March 2, 2009 10:24 PM The kit contains glucogon powder, a vial of water, and a syringe (It's been awhile since I've looked in one but I believe this is essential correct). The water and powder are mixed together and then injected. |

I am one that carries a emergency kit.I have never had to use it but it is with me if I should have the need..I hope this is some help to you--Bob By the way my doctor tells me that I am a plunger So that is the reason I was advised to carru the kit. |

I carry a Glucagon Emergency kit and try to 'educate' others about them. I am always surprised to find out how many people don't even know about them! Everyone seems to know about glucose tablets but don't realize there are other alternatives as well.

My physicians are awesome about giving me an appropriate quantity so that I can keep them in the car, throughout the house and in my purse. I use the old ones to demonstrate to my family on how to use them should the need arise. While I've never passed out from low sugar, I have gotten close and I have friends who are EMT's/paramedics who have responded to many calls of 'unresponsive' diabetics. By the time they are called it is often too late! If we can educate our friends and family on how to administer insulin and glucagon we are all better off! You know what they say about an 'ounce of prevention'......... |

I don't have one... I've found your typical drink box of juice is enough to catch it when I go low, my symptoms are very obvious to me. I've never passed out from a low, though I've come close.

Do you have to have a prescription to get one? My mom is about to start insulin and she has been having low AM readings, so I worry.

i carry a tube of giucon in my puers and when i go swimming i uuse a tube of iceing sugar but didi not know about the shots. thanks for this information.

How can I get 1 of these kits I have been havin serious out of control problems with my sugar constantly bottomin out,Sometimes I'm warned more times than not I'm not. I am just now hearin about this....I have no insurance I do have a prescription card..By no means financially stable.Any guidance will be so appreciated |

I do...but I am prone to sudden onsets of severe hypoglycemia (we are not sure why I am so reactive lately)...I've experienced several grand-mal seizures...So I now carry one, have had to use it once, and I now take it everywhere! :) |

I do along with glucose meter, and insulin. I also let all who can assist me in time of need know what it is and how to use it. |
I would like to know how many friends on this site have or carry a Glucagon Emergency kit?
