Immediate Prayer Request

My 24 yr. old daughter just got into a car wreck. Her body was thrown half way through the windshield. She severed her spine in 3 places and the doctors never expect her to walk again. She punctured a lung, broke ribs, broke an elbow, crushed her throat. they are going to take her off of her breathing tube today to see if she can breathe on her own. If not, she will be on a breathing aparatus of some type. I live in Missouri and she is in Alaska. We are waiting to head up to Anchorage before we get the go ahead to be with her.
Needless to say, I myself am disabled. My ra and lupus and diabetis are all acting up... the first plane will take 9 + hours... I won't be able to walk myself! My heart is crushed. I ask for prayer.
Thank you all, Leigh

Leigh, my heart breaks for you. There's not anything as bad as having our children hurting and in pain. Praise the Lord that He can AND DOES work miracles! I can see that you believe in the power of prayer, as I do. I will be praying diligently for her speedy and miraculous recovery, and for you and your health issues as you make this stressful journey. I have put your daughter on the prayer list at my own church and sent emails to many friends. I also put her on the prayer list at the church where I am secretary. Just pray, pray, pray, Leigh. I pray for God to give you all the strength and courage you need right now. I also pray for those precious grandbabies. Keep us posted when you feel up to it and have the time. God bless you!

I don't know how to thank you all for your support and prayers. They are going to take Joleena off of her tubes in 2-3 days! She is on a morphine drip and heavily sedated, but she is responding as much as could be expected at this time. We are hoping for the best. We are going to fly to Alaska on the 3rd or 4th of Dec. She should be out of the critical care ward and I will be allowed to stay with her at the hospital.
I called my Doctor and my pharmacy today, they will not give me my morphine and hydrocodones until they run out. Emergency or not. I cannot afford to purchase them myself and my medicaid is not applicable out of state. We are using our nest egg just to be able to go on this trip. Plus, due to our disablilities, we need a comfortable bed to sleep on. No couches ect.... so we may end up needing a hotel room. Plus, renta car.... What a mess.... But, she will be more alert and I will be able to find out if she needs to come back to Missouri to be with me apon release from the hospital.

I am just trying to thank you all. I wish for everyone to have a happy and safe Thanksgiving. God Bless you all.
Your Friend, Leigh

This may not be of comfort to you, but things do have a way of working out. I, too, am on medicare and medicaid, and on a very limited income. However, I have been able to make it thru some very tight financial times. Everyone is praying for you, and God does work in mysterious ways. Good luck to you and your family.

LadyDi replied November 27, 2008 3:23 AM

It rips my heart out to hear of all you're dealing with. As if it's not enough to have this tragedy in your life, there are these other issues and complications. I know all who know about it feel so frustrated and helpless at not being able to do more. You and your entire family are being covered in prayer at this very moment, and will be throughout this ordeal. We can only trust in God's love, power and mercy and leave it in His hands. Never forget that God loves you and we're all with you in spirit the whole way through. Have a safe trip.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family through this tough time. There was a time when my daughter, then just 20, came down with this unknown blood disorder disease that was a mystery to all her doctors. My daughter thought she was going to die, thinking she had AIDS or leukemia or some other such horrifying life threatening disease. They finally found out it was something called ITP, a blood disorder that I not well known, but it has something to do with the # of platelets in her body. There was a chance she could die. I can really empathize with you about your daughter and you being sick at the same time. But hang on to your faith in God because that's what sustained all of us through our ordeal. I believe in miracles and God gave us one with our daughter. She was put on loads of steriod medication (causing a lot of weight gain, the moon face, etc.), but she made it through and she went into remission. After she had her second baby though (last February 2008, she got it again - maybe it lay dormant and became active again - but although she was so sick and struggled with her pregnancy and the ITP, she managed to have a healthy, beautiful baby girl, had to go on the steroids again for a while, but we got another miracle and she's doing fine now. So please, just hang in there, keep your family and friends close for moral support, say a lot of prayers, and believe in miracles - they do happen! Hope for the very best to you and your family. I will continue to keep you in my prayers.

LadyDi replied December 8, 2008 4:12 PM

Oh Lynn, what a wonderful story. God IS good, isn't He? I know you all must have been beside yourselves with worry. I often wonder how folks who do not have their faith to help them through these tough times make it at all. God bless you for sharing this encouraging part of your lives. Enjoy your daughter and that precious grandbaby!

Hello Everyone,
I am sorry that I haven't updated with you guys for a while. Joleena is up and down in surviving through out this ordeal.
She has a infection of her blood. They are not sure what it is. She was running 103.6 last night....
They had to postpone her surgery on her elbow. She has been tested for everything under the sun....
THey are now thinking that she contacted this blood infection when she was in surgery when she first entered the hospital. Holding on to my faith has been tested to the fine line... I have to keep telling myself that she is in God's hands and to let her stay there.

Everything is on hold... They saw two shadows in her nasal cavity on the catscan (another one) and assumed that she had an infection in her sinuses. So, they did a very invasive proceedure and went in to remove the infection... there was nothing there. It turned out to be just shadows... That upset me... I know that they are doing the best that they can...

She is back on life support. I have no idea how long she will remain on it. Since she has tube going down her throat they can't move her around or it can cause severe trauma inside her throat... So, she has developed a large (and I mean large) rash on her bottom, front, and legs... My poor baby girl is going through the ringer... one thing after another... Her temp. has gone down some... but, I can loose her at any time.

Thank you all for all of your prayers.... I will always remember all of your support.

Your Friend, Leigh

You all continue to be in all of our prayers. I wish we could all be with you to have a big old "group hug", but the group prayers really are the most important. We're hugging you with our hearts. Just don't give up. It's so difficult for us to keep the faith sometimes, when all seems to be crumbling around us, but God is in control. He'll get you through this no matter what the outcome is. I can tell by the things you say that you have a strong faith and believe this. Hugs & prayers, Diane

I'll send up a prayer or two. I am kind of lost for words at times like these. I'm sure every thought on this earth has went thru your head. When I find myself up against the wall, I let go and let God. His will is already been done, we are just waiting to see what it was He had in mind. It doesn't always seem like the right thing at the time, but in the long run we learn. I'm feeling emotional right now about your situation, as i am a sensitive person and I find it hard to come up with grat words of consolation. All I can do is share my faith.

Update:

This morning started off difficult. My ex husband and I were given an ultimatum...

Joleena's Fever was 104.6 when I went to the hospital... She has been back on life support for the last 4 days... They offered to take her off and let her go peacefully, or to have a trac surgery as soon as possible....

She is scheduled for surgery at 10:30 in the morning...

I went to a pow wow gathering and they laid hands on me as her contact and prayed to our Lord and Savior for her fever to break and her bacteria in her blood to be identified... When I went back to the hospital her fever had come down to 101... They believe that the bacteria may have been due to the hospital when she first came it to the emergency room or possibly from her 3 blood transfusions...

What a tradgedy this all is...

Thank you all for your prayers and your support. I will never forget your kindness...

I don't know how to thank all of you.

Prayers are the answer. My daughter is having reflexes in her legs and arms... To the doctors amazement. She is retaining water around her lung and it keeps collapsing, but, she is winning. There is reaction movement in her legs and conscious movement in her arms. Still no reaction in her hands, yet. She has a long ways to go but Glory to our King!!! She will walk again!!! Thank you all for your love and support!!! And thank you Jesus!

Hello Everyone,
Things have been so busy... I am sorry that I haven't written sooner.
Joleena is now at the Harborview Hospital in Seattle WA for rehabilitation.
I need your continual prayers. It looks like I am the only person that will care for her now. She will be coming to stay with me apon her release from the hospital. As you all know, I have lupus, diabetis, RA, retinapothy, asthma,epilepsy,cataracts,neuropathy... ect.... I pray that I can care for her until she gets into a place of her own. Her children will move to be with her when she gets settled. PRAY PRAY PRAY...
She has great ROM in her upper extremities... Nothing in her wrists, hands, and legs. She does have feeling in her back and chest. She is still a quadriplegic. I have signed her up for donations from a chronically disabled person. If she is accepted they will tell her story and collect funds for her to use to purchase a van with a chair lift, housing, and any other needed equipment. Please pray that her application is approved. Thank you all for your care and support. I have taken non for granted.

Your Friend, Leigh

Debe Pendice replied January 16, 2009 12:28 AM

Leigh, Joleena has been on our churches pray list from day one and will be on forever. You are also on the pray list. Ok, so now you know your daughter will be spending time with you. Now is a good time to try and get some care for yourself and make sure you are in better health. This is a chore and I know you will do it. But it may be time to get backup help from family and friends. You can ask them to give you an hour here and there, even if you get 1 hour rest. Now start thinking ahead and make sure your health don't get any worst. I am hear if you need an ear or just a shoulder to lean on....

So nice to hear from you, Leigh. You and your daughter have really been on my mind and in my prayers.

I'm sure you are so exhausted mentally, physically and emotionally. I can only imagine what your daughter's state of mind must be at this point. I never cease to be amazed, however, at the strength and courage that we find in ourselves through the Lord, and I know He is helping all of you through this.

You have so much to deal with already that I worry about your having to be her caregiver. I pray God provides some assistance for you in that area, and that He continues to be with you in dealing with all that's on your own plate.

This experience that's happenng to your daughter surely brings home the knowledge that any minute our lives can be snuffed out or changed in ways we could never imagine. Hang in there, Leigh. Know we are all praying so hard for your daughter, and you. We appreciate so much your taking time to give us this update.

Much love, Diane

You have a lot on your plate but remember the 'big guy' doesn't give us more than we can handle.. hang in there and practice your deep breathing... one day at a time sweety. I wish I was closer I'd offer to help out but I'm way over here in Wisconsin in the deep freeze. If you need anything at all that I can do long distance please don't be afraid to ask. What wonderful friends I have seen when looking to hear from you about Joleen. You have support out there, willing and able. At this time of need, do not be afraid to ask, or receive.
I am,however; worried about you. You do need to take care of yourself. I know what you are going through, somewhat; my husband was slowly dimishing while having severe renal shutdown and on dialysis and it was three very hard years; I did not take care of myself and got very ill.

But, I have been looking for your posts and am glad you updated, however difficult the job is ahead for both you and Jolene; I will pray that each day gets a little better. I am so overwhelmed over what you two have had to deal with that I really don't know what to say, except wish you both to stay well.

I am so sorry about you and your daughter! I have learned that you "Do what you can, NOT what others, or yourself, expects you to do"! We are human too and should stay within our own limits, be there for her, that will be enough for HER, then let the caregivers do their job, PRAY with and for her, the loving touch that only a mother can give!! Folks on air flights are very helpful to get you a wheel chair, and to make your jouney north, as comfortable as possible! I believe that our God is a God of great miracles, and the Scriptures promise us that nothing happens that is not a part of His bigger purpose, much bigger and greater than the picture that we see with our fleshly eyes. All things work to the good for those who believe. When we can't see, He still moves in His wisdom to complete His glorious plan for each of our lives. May God bless each of you This day. I know that it has been a long time since I have been on DC... I apologize to everyone...
It has been a HUGE change of our lifestyle since these three has joined to household... time has flown and things are starting to fall into place... it has been a rocky ride...
My grandaughter (7) Christiana is going home after the summer vacation... she uprooted the household with her untreated ADHD.... as much as I love her, I know that I am not in good enough health to care for her on a regular basis...
Joleena has undergone a sugery since she has been here and has had a rough ride of things... They are going to rebreak her arm and try to fix it.... pray Lord
She is adjusting to life here but I am concerned about her future... Her daughter will be leaving and will cause a void in Joleena's heart... She will see her boyfriend when he comes to pick up her daughter... she will have to say goodbye to them both... I figure that she will be feeling quite alone... I dread the tears to come...

Joleena is settling in with a caregiver, medicaid paid transportation (to dr. appt.'s only) , home care nurse wkly... I still am concerned about physical therepy... it is not provided unless you are on medicare... We are currently trying to arrange an immediate acceptance to medicare vs. the regular 2 yr. waiting period...

Thank you all for your caring and support. I don't know how I would have dealt with all of this without this community.

God Bless, Leigh

My prayers are also with you.I can't imagine what either of you are going through. How helpless you must feel.I can't imagine not being able to be by my child's side in such a crisis. My heart goes out to you. Just know that she is still here and will need you and all of your strength when you are able to be by her side.If you can't keep your thoughts straight (which is completely understandable) ask a close friend to help out right now..I know that can be hard to do but not only can they help you pack, take your meds on time, make a meal or two but they can be a great support, someone to cry with, share with and plain unload on..
I am a list maker also especially in high stress situations.when you think something you my need to remember write it in a note book.Big or small it doesn't matter..Emotions or shopping list..what you want to say or take, what needs to be done before you can go..I know it seems small and ridiculous in such a desperate time but can be helpful..lists in a note book become a type of journal to look back on and check thoughts and dates. I call mine my brain ...
God bless and give you all strength..I pay to read a positive outcome about your daughter and her recovery.

Brandi, I am with you on the notebook for lists, feelings, I buy spiral notebooks every years that school starts, on sale, several for various notes, recipes, it is easier to keep track of a notebook than a loose piece of paper that has a way of disappearing!! I buy different colors for different needs, keep gardening plans, personal thoughts---etc, then when wanting a notebook I grab one up, even keep Drs appt in them---keep one beside my easy chair and phone, they do help. Of course different info gets into different books, but that just makes for more interesting reading. hugs, PR
