I track my info daily on SugarStats. Here's today's info so far:
.
I take Lantus 38 units at night, Novolin R at mealtimes, metformin 850 3 times a day and one glyburide pill.

November 10, 2008
123 Waking Up 7:15 AM
71 Low Sugar at 11:00 am
116 Before Lunch at 11:45 am
96 After Lunch at 2:30 pm
150 After Snack at 5:12 pm
119 before dinner at 6:00 pm
136 after dinner at 8:30 pm

The 71 was too low - I had to correct for it by taking glucose tablets - I was shaking really really bad. I made the mistake of taking my glyburide tablet in the morning instead of after dinner - I thought since my fasting bg was a little higher than usual that it would be better to take it in the am. Bad idea.

Doctor told me to taper off on the glyburide anyway, so soon I will probably be able to stop taking it all together.

Before Breakfast: 139 mg/dL
After Breakfast: 127 mg/dL

After Lunch: 116 mg/dL

Before Supper: 144 mg/dL
After Supper: 142 mg/dL

this is better than I've been in a few days. I haven't been feeling that well.

Jlynn replied November 13, 2008 4:38 PM

I was just going to comment on sliding scale...i have just started it, still learning, yet it has helped me so much..my old doctor never put me on anything and at times id be at 300,before a meal and eat w/out a shot and it would of course go higher ...
now the diabetes wellness center taught me the sliding scale and put me on novolog(pen) and lantus. I take 1 unit of the novolog per every 50 im over 120, plus count what im going to eat and add it to the dose..It has helped those far..Every Doctor has their own.."Best -Prescription"

Which Novolin are you taking?

I take Lantus 38 units at night and Novolin R at mealtimes (using a insulin to carb ratio of 1:5). It's working well for me except those rare occasions where I boneheadedly miscalculate how many carbs I'm going to eat and then I either take too much or too little insulin.

You may want to discuss a different routine with your doctor. I had to push the issue with mine - otherwise she'd probably have only perscribed Lantus alone, or Novolin N alone which would have essentially done nothing for my bg levels.

tchong replied November 14, 2008 8:38 AM

well its insulin novolin its a long acting insulin so it takes a while for it to start working the doctor calls me every week to see how its doing if I should up it. so we have, now I take 25units in the morning and 20 units before dinner but this morning was the first time it was below 200 fasting.

tchong replied November 14, 2008 8:34 AM

Yeah Im dealing with my doc she knows my numbers..its going down this morning it was 188 slowly by slowly its going down

enigmalady777 replied November 15, 2008 6:53 PM

Sounds like it's the Novolin N which is an intermediate insulin.

I was running in the 160-195 range for fasting blood sugars prior to adding the Novolin R. Once I added the regular insulin to the long acting Lantus, that's when I was finally able to get those stubborn fasting blood sugars down to the 95-120 range.

Thanks. They are much improved over what they were just over a month ago! I was seldom under 195 first thing in the morning, after meals were in the 200's and before meals ranged from 125-150. The insulin has made a huge difference, along with watching my carbs.

Patti,

If you dont mind me asking what kind of sliding scale are you on for the Novolog. I just got switched to Novolog today with a new doctor and he has me on a sliding scale but not to take any if my BG is below 179...that just doesnt make sense to me....

Vicki

patti replied November 12, 2008 2:07 PM

if I am 70 - 100 I take 2 units, then 1 unit for every 15 grams of carbs. I take 20 units of Levemier at night. My diet is very different from yours...I dont eat any wheat products, anything with eggs, sugar, or nuts. And everything is fresh because of allergies to preservatives and food coloring. All of my meat is certified to be hormone free and I have to get turkey and chicken from the butcher. I cant have the additives they put in the meat. If he is starting you at nothing under 179 it is probably to see how you react to the insulin. I would keep a log of food excercise, and drinks and how much insulin for at least a week then call him/her with your numbers. Good luck to you!

sexyswamprat replied November 12, 2008 9:47 PM

Do you have insurance? My doctor wrote me a perscription for my test strips. With my insurance I pay 20$ for a box of 100. It test at least 4 times a day. Thirty minutes b 4 I eat and 2 hours after.

highlandcitygirl replied November 12, 2008 10:50 PM

thank you, i do have insurance i didn't know a dr. could write a presciption for the strips. and i had no idea when and how many times to test.

sexyswamprat replied November 13, 2008 12:59 AM

I would check with your insurance company and make sure they cover them, and find out how much they would be. I didn't insurance would cover them either. It just hit me one day when I couldn't afford the strips. I called them the next day and sure enough. I was so happy. Of course it's always better to pay 20 for 100 than 98 for 100.

caspersmama replied November 14, 2008 3:01 PM

My insurance pays for everything. the strips, lancets, and alcohol swaps. But the swaps are cheaper at wal mart for the equate brand than my co pay. But if you do not ask you will not know who pays for what. LOL

Deleted User replied November 14, 2008 1:44 AM

Misery, you don't need to explain, it's a personal choice whether you post or not. I don't because I like to keep that to myself for the most part. Good luck with your control!!!

caspersmama replied November 14, 2008 3:13 PM

Exactly, this was always suposed to be a voluntary thing and only when you wanted too. I do not post everyday just when I feel like it. We should only use these numbers to see how others are doing not to judge or feel sorry for ourselves if our numbers are not the same. Because everyone's numbers are going to be different even if we ate and took the same meds. But I will tell you all I have lost another pound. So since last week I have lost 11 pounds being off of my insulin. I love it. My stomach is actually getting smaller. I now only look 6 months pregnant instead of 9. LOL
I felt so good about it. I got a cute little haircut, colored my hair lighter and got some highlights. I do not want to buy any new clothes until I can go down a full size. Maybe 10 more pounds. Actually I have about 3 sizes of clothes in my closet. It will be like a whole new wardrobe when I can get back in them. Sorry this is so long. Have a good day all.

Hi! I also have gastroparesis caused from polio in 1948. I was diagnosed with this in 1993. I now have a g-tube for the days I'm too sick to eat. My blood sugars have never been between 80 & 130. I think it is because my food sits for so long. Last time I was tested food sat in my stomach 18hrs. I'm very sick 24/7 so not sure how this is going to effect things I have only been a diabetic for 2mths.

I am so sorry you had to go back on isulin. I am doing the pills because i came off of insulin last week. So far so good. and I have lost 11 pounds. I am determined to do this. I like losing weight and no more shots. Hang in there. You may get there again real soon.

enigmalady777 replied November 15, 2008 6:59 PM

It's amazing how much the insulin can help. I also use a similar regimen (Lantus and Novolin R for mealtimes) and I am seeing numbers much lower than I've seen in YEARS!!!

Most of the time my levels are in the "normal" as in "non-diabetic" range and it just tickles me to see that!

I was testing when I got up in the mornings before I eat and 2 hours after every meal. Then my nurse from my Insurance told me to check with my Doctor to see how much I should check it because she only cares about my fasting blood sugar, and she said I might be testing to much. They pay for my strips,
my medicine (glipizide and rampril), and they sent me a free metor to check my blood sugar with. My blood sugar this morning was 73, and before dinner it was 80.
Debbie

caspersmama replied November 16, 2008 2:41 PM

I have never heard of testing too much. what is too much. I just want to know how I am doing during the day. My strips say 4 times a day which is 120 a month but I get 200 at a time for extra testing so I do. I test in the morning, then after breakfast. Before and after dinner, but sometimes I just want to know before and after lunch especially since I have been off the insulin. Wow, too much. Never knew that. I will ask doctor next time I go.

debbie replied November 16, 2008 8:07 PM

I go to my doctor tomorrow around 4 p.m.
Will let you know what she says. Thanks for your response will be watching for your response from your doctor.
Debbie

vgarrison replied November 16, 2008 9:03 PM

Debbie,

The only thing I can think of why she said too much, is maybe the concern of the insurance not covering it....I know my doctor only prescribed me to test 4 times a day which equals 120 times a month, and I get 150 test strips a month....so it allows me to test more if I need to....I mean if I feel low...or way to high, then of course I am going to test...but at over a dollar a strip not everyone can afford to test that many times a day, especially if they dont have insurance, or they wont pay for that many tests....

Today is a GREAT DAY! I take 1000mg Metformin X2 Daily, 4mg Avandia, Lantus 10Units AM-15 Units PM & Humalog 10 Units w/Breakfast, 8 Untis w/Lunch & 7 Units w/Dinner. This is constantly changing as I call the nurse on Mondays and Thursdays to report sugars and change doses as needed.(And this is only for the diabetes...add in another 8 meds for other conditions and even I get confused) Just changed from 14 Units Lantus PM & 8 Units Humalog w/ Dinner to new schedule. SO here are my numbers.
Fast - 113
After Bkfst - 117
Before Lunch- 118
After Lunch-163

Rice...You are my enemy...but I love you soooo much, lol

My doctor has me test fasting & before and after each meal as well as once more before bed. This means 8 stips a day and medicaid only covers 3 a day. I am paying out of pocket for the remaining strips and it's killing me. Shouldn't they go by what the doctor prescribes???

fun2u2007 replied November 17, 2008 10:43 PM

Does your Doctor have samples he could give you to help offset the cost? My Doctor gives me samples of Januvia because it costs me $25.00/month.

caspersmama replied November 17, 2008 11:11 PM

Before I try a new medicine, if he has it, my doctor will give me samples to try to see how it does. I also am taking a blood pressure medicine my insurance will not pay for without documentation. So for the past 4 months he has been giving me the samples to take. Since I see him every month for pain meds I just pick up some more samples. But it is working so he does not mind. Check and see if doctor has any, Usually if they have them they will let you try to see if it works. Especially now since the economy is so bad.

BeckyJ replied November 19, 2008 5:04 PM

Thank you for all you advice. I am very thankful for the Dr's that I work with in that they will provide me with samples (When they can) However in a city that has only 3 Endocronologist the sample choices are kinda low and don't cover test strips. I do get my Avandia and some of my other meds as samples and with the Medikan card my other prescriptions are covered but not the testing supplies. I have been looking into mail order companies after speaking with everyone and hope that that helps. Will let you know. Worse they can do is say no right? :)

caspersmama replied November 20, 2008 12:47 AM

Also check on Ebay. Sometimes they have really good prices for strips. They have a section just for diabetic stuff.

Don't know what it going on today. Called the nurse and she said to take shots 15-20 minutes before meal instead of right before but not to change the levels. If I still can't get it under control they going to add Starlic. Does anyone know what this is?

caspersmama replied November 29, 2008 4:57 PM

My doctor said if I could not control without insulin he would add Starlix. I am going to go look it up on Web Md. Will get back to you on it.

caspersmama replied November 29, 2008 5:20 PM

Ok here is the info:
Starlix, generic name is nateglinide. It helps stop the rapid rise in blood sugar that can occur immediately after eating. It increases the amount of insulin produced by the pancreras. It is taken just before you eat because it works quickly and does not stay in the body long. In some reviews I read, it did Not cause weight gain as a side effect. Which is great.
Hope this info helped you some. If you want more info go to the WebMd website. I check out all meds my doctor prescribes or thinking about prescribing there.

BeckyJ replied December 1, 2008 9:24 PM

Thank you, I was spelling the name wrong and couldn't find anything. They have decided to adjust my insulin down 2 units and hope I don't skyrocket back to the 500's again.

I actually track my blood sugars on line at SweetSpot.dm . This is a GREAT way to keep track of your readings (and other health info that you may want to keep track of). You can also invite people to be on your "team" and they can track your progress with you!

If you want to try it for free for a month, go to http://www.sweetspot.dm, sign up and use this referal code: ref88bc3 . It's easy and gives you a great picture of how you're doing!

Mine are horrible today and I feel it. 61 at 6am, insulin shot then dropped to 39 at 11am. Orange juice and glucose brought it up to 65. 2 hours after eating it was at 58. I just want to cry. Sick all day and so weak. Just took last insulin shot, maybe it will come up after the shot and eating again.

Hope this is not a stupid question, but why would you take insulin with such a low fasting reading? I get very weak & shaky if my BS drops to the 70's. It seems very dangerous for you to have such low BS.
