I was just wondering if any of the ladies have a hard time controlling their bs and hunger round the special time of the month. Last nite I ate a whole bag of cinnamon toast cereal and woke up with fasting bs of 214. I felt like a loser but couldn't stop eating it . Sorry if I offend anyone with this topi

My BGs definitely take a rise during this time, hormones all that great stuff along with my emotions. I definitely get hungry during this time one of my favorites are low carb enchiladas and sugar free jello with fat free whipped topping for dessert. I sometimes just want cheetos, have tried the glucerma bars will eat them with a cup of coffe sometimes only 1/2 of one. Yummiest!

Also for the week prior to your time of the month aka moon time, DONT eat green leafy salads reason is that we tend to have extra bleeding during that time. Something I learned in Phlebotomy classes.

Spinach to name one that I can think of at the moment. I am not sure if its for all women…however you can experiment if you like your choice. Hope this helps as it was meant too. Not meant to cause confusion.

I am newly diagnosed with diabetes and I am not allowed to eat the green leafy veggies that have high vitamin K as I am on warfarin everday and can't eat them. But I can see how that would make you have extra bleeding.

Can you tell me more about this? What is it about green leafy vegetables?

Interesting. I never noticed that before. But only because I wasn't aware of it. Did they say this is the case for all women?

When I eat a LOT of salad, about 10 days before my time, I get zero cramps, and my high pain in my lower abdomen is greatly reduced. One thing I know for sure, if I don't eat enough salads, greens, and pasta during this time, my diabetes goes crazy…way way out of whack, to the point where I have severe insomnia and the like. No matter what I do basically though, my blood sugars SOAR 10 days before my time…I mean, they just hit the moon. ANNE

You didn't offend me at all. My body seriously demands extra nutrients and vitamins about 12 days before my time of the month, so, for a whole 12 days every month, I crave greens, raisins, lettuce, tomatoes, and protein. About 5 days before my time, I can eat half a box of cereal. I also crave apples then, too. ANNE

My BG's aren't a problem but I do notice an increased apetite during that time. That is also when I eat more snacks than usual. On any other day I will eat my 3 squares a day and maybe 2 snacks (after lunch & before bed), but during my time of the month, I nosh constantly. That's why I make sure I have healthy snacks to choose from. Nuts (peanuts or almonds), snack bars, replacement shakes, salad, multi-grain crackers, etc… With the exception of the salad though, I still eat these snacks according to the serving size. But they help to get me to my next big meal.

When I had eaten a handful of nuts as a snack I had a sever drop in BS & my doctor told me it was because nuts have no carbs and I needed to have carbs to keep my BS from dropping. It is a balancing act for sure.

I do get cravings. Thats when I want food more spicy.
Eat a balanced meal so you are full
Then have a fiber one bar for dessert or fiber one cereal
which has a flavor like cinnamon toast crunch
I would say you can't buy that cereal anymore
or anything else that is so good it tempts youRead this discussion about being part of a family
where a family member had diabetes and the others do not
Its wonderful and touching.

Fiber one has a version that you can eat not the whole box though!

Yes the Fiber One 90 Calories Bars are one of my favorites (17g carbs & high in fiber) but I have switched to the Atkins Bars (16g carbs & high in fiber and protein). But you still can't eat the entire box.

Denisency, I went through menopause about 4 years ago and I still get those cravings, dang chocolate and salt combos. One thig that helps me is doing some kind of exercise when that happens plus I keep a bag of walnuts to munch on. On DC no one minds your discussion of anything related to diabetes such as female issues.

I was going to suggest that up top. Almonds are my go to snack when I get like this. Eating salad helps too.

I went through menopause 4 years ago as well. I've never really had huge cravings but my weakness is salty stuff or salty/sweet, like kettle corn. The only diabetic counselor I've ever seen was in the hospital and she said I could eat popcorn when I had that craving. I have noticed that since being diagnosed last August I've wanted chocolate or candy more often. Because chocolate can trigger migraines I don't eat much of it so those cravings are strange to me. I like the Special K bars, they're within the limits of carbs, etc and they really taste good.

My nutrionist said to stay away from special k bars empty carbs I think I should wire my jaw shut around this time of month lol
-
Jeanae February 4 at 11:123 Likes
No! Don't do that! I had mine wired shut years ago and it was NO fun. Drop some fruit or cucmbers in water and freeze them. When you get the urge to munch, take it out and suck on it or put it in a drink or (not good for your teeth but…) chew on the ice. I don't eat choc. so not a problem for me but I do want something sweet and spicy. I take some fruit (not much) and add some cayenne or chili poweder on top. Sweet and spicy. Yum!

Denisency, you might try glucerna bars, they are a meal replacement but are designed for diabetic nutritional needs.
