The problem I've run into finding you those phone numbers for you is you need to be on Medicare. Are you? Or SSI or Disability or on Medicaid, But so far I have found one until you let me know about Disability, SSI or something. This one doesn't appear to need those others: the number is: 1-800-902-5989.. good luck to you, anxiously await your reply. Valentine Lady

I get the Diabetes Living magazine which has great recipes. I also have the Everyday Diabetes Cookbook. Sign up for dlife.com and get their recipes and the ones on Diabetic Livings website. Kraft foods is loaded with recipes. I copy and paste them to a word doc and save them to a flash drive. Print them when I need them and save the print out in a binder. This way you build your own cookbook with recipes you would like to try.

aunwillcomeout: I have a great suggestion because I've done it myself. Those ad's on T.V. about the FREE diabetic cookbooks is for real. The phone numbers are like 800 numbers, so it cost you nothing. You get 5 books each time. There are 3 advertisements, that's 15 books. Each has their own catagory, such as main meals, snacks. Well you get the idea. Good luck, their the best. Valentine Lady

Hi Joyce: I'm so sorry that happened to you, I'm sure you have neuropathy, but without insurance no Dr. will see you. Is that right? Do you have a fee clinic near where you live? Their not exactly free but they go on a sliding scale according to what finances come into the home. You really need to apply for medicare. You have a real disability with arthritis and neuropathy. It's worth a shot. Let me know how it goes…Hugs to you…Valentine Lady

Hi Val, my neuropathy only acts up when my numbers get out of whack. I don't have arthritis. There is a clinic near me. I actually hate going their because of the treatment people with and without insurance receive. I stopped my mom from going there years ago and got her in with her sister's doctor. He mainly sees geriatric pts so I can't see him. I applied for Medical Assistance and I can continue at the clinic where I was going. Hugs to you too.

Okay, I will check out the ads on TV. I don't watch TV too often, but hopefully I'll catch an ad when I'm watching. Thanks, V.

I just use my usual recipes adapted to minimize carbs, use only olive and nut oils, fresh organic vegetables, range free meat and eggs, and AVOID rice, potatoes, bread except in fiber rich varieties (black or mahagoney rice, whole grain gluten free bread, red potatoes, etc.).
I use the glycemic index as my guide to which carbs should/should not be in my diet and I have removed wheat, barley, rye, and oats because of an underlying issue with gluten intolerance.

I do that too! Spent too many years perfecting some of my recipes to just toss them aside. Now I'm tweaking as I go. I sometimes have to get creative. Like recently, I used pomegranate juice in a recipe, in lieu of red wine. It worked out great!

Sometimes, we have to get very creative, but it's fun to something that love become safe, healthy, and still taste GOOD. It's worth it.

Carol: I agree with every word you just said and I have converted my special recipes. But, I've had fun using new recipes as well, that are good for me too.
But I don't have the same problem as you do, the gluten intolerance, is what I'm talking about. That's a problem all in it's own. You do have a job on your hands, that's for sure. I can see why you prefer to adjust your own recipes. Specilal hugs to you, Peggy -

Oh, I use lots of new ones also; the point of the comment was that you don't have to go looking for a new cookbook, but CAN adapt the old favorites.

Carol: I agree with you on that, but there are lots of good people out there that aren't that good of cooks and are unable to convert like you and I. We have been cooking and loving it for a very long time, some of our new members haven't. That's what I meant.. I hope I haven't hurt anyone's feelings, I truly didn't mean to. A special hug to you, Peggy

Aint that pomegranate great? I had a goulash recipe that used fresh beets as part of the mirepoix. Being too high in sugar I left them out and used pomegranate juice (less than 1Tbl.) and added a little arrow root for thickener. Funny thing with fresh beets – at my age I have to put a sticky note up the night before reminding myself I ate them. Those colors coming out of the human body aren’t natural.

LOL! I bet! I braised some short ribs with the pomegranate. Umm…umm!

Well there is our very own Best Of DC cookbook:
http://creative.alliancehealth.com/em/dc/1408...
Every recipe is under 10 carbs, and so far it’s been the tastiest and most D friendly. Nice that it’s downloadable and can be used on a reader too.
I haven’t found any diabetic cookbooks I’m really impressed with, but it depends on how strict you are with your feeding. Some were just downright inappropriate for anyone.
I’ve had better luck using Low GI recipes and cookbooks which are more appropriate for my meals. -

Of course! I didn't know there was a compiled version. Thanks!

I agree. Books that say Diabetic on them are sometimes misleading. One of my favorites is the Carb Addicts Cook Book. It is full of low carb recipes that you can mix together for a meal. http://www.amazon.com/Carbohydrate-Addicts-Co...
I have one that is by the American Diabetes Association that I really like and it is called Flavorful Seasons. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/094544... You can get a used one for a penny plus $3.99 shipping…can't beat that!
It is broken down into seasonal cooking and I really enjoy the complexity of the recipes. They are very flavorful. I have shared quite a few on here with my own adjustments. I just can't ever take a recipe for face value. I am always tinkering.

Wish I could say I could tinker with recipes! I'll try some dc recipes out, and share my experimenting when I get better at it.
-
sunwillcomeout February 3 at 11:262 Likes
Good point. This is exactly what I was afraid of (getting a misleading cookbook). Thank you for the pointers.
-
Nick1962 February 3 at 8:544 Likes
Agree about the tinkering. I don't use cook books much, they're more like suggestion books.

There is a site on line- not really a diabetic site but has LOTS of very good recipes that are diabetic friendly. It is called skinny taste.com. Many of my favorite seafood recipes and veggie recipes come from that site.
