auntheidi replied June 30, 2008 8:24 AM Ditto the get a new doctor idea. I've been on a fentanyl patch for 5 years and am not addicted - just getting much needed pain relief. I was switched from Neurontin to Lyrica and there are other treatments, too. Find a more experienced doc. Ask your diabetes support group leader or CDE for a referral.

MY NAME IS TERESA AND I AM VERY MUCH OVER WEIGHT, AND MY DISABILITIES KEEP ME FROM BEING ABLE TO WALK & EXERCISE.
Muffet replied May 24, 2008 6:46 PM Teresa, I understand how you feel as I have been in and out of depression for a number of years. The diabetes and fibromyalgia does not help the mood. And this is a good place to vent frustrations. However, I have learned through some counseling that it is better not to dwell on all the things that are wrong with our body and the things we cannot do. Try to think of the things you can still do. Some days I have to live by the 5 minute rule. Get up and do something for 5 minutes -- whether it is reading, or picking up a few things in the house or folding clothes etc. It does help. I am fortunate to be working with a yoga instructor, who focuses on working with people with pain. It has been beneficial to me as that is all the exercise I get each day. I too was forced to go on disability from I job I really loved. There is light out there. Just don't give up hope.

DiabetesDiva replied July 4, 2008 10:14 PM I am so sorry for for all that you are struggling with. My mother suffered from chronic pain and its hard to have a "normal life". She was bipolar with serious bouts of depression and was on medicare. I too fight depression. I have found a combination of meds and psychotherapy so helpful. Perhaps, your dr could prescribe something and refer you to a therapist. There's a great show on PBS called "Sit & Be Fit" which may work for you. You can do this! Just start slowly & take baby steps. Don't beat yourself up if you're not perfect - adequate is just fine. Depression and pain make everything seem hopeless and overwhelming. Also keeping a "grateful" journal may remind you of the happy and positive things in your life. Would your husband be willing to partner with you on your journey to good health or maybe a friend? It helps to have an advocate. Good luck!
Nana5 replied October 4, 2008 2:51 PM My husband is 62, diabetic, had colon cancer, a heart attack, chronic pain due to several ailments and is now up to 19 medications daily. He also weight 385 lbs. He is in the process of qualifying for weight loss surgery because he has been told if he doesn't do something he will not be alive in 5 years. He was also told that after the surgery some of his health problems may be helped such as the diabetes. Also the amount of medications will be reduced. I urge you to speak with a specialist in gastric bypass for an opinion. As my husband is a prime example, dieting doesn't always work. Good Luck and God Bless

Hi, I have horrible neuropathy, mostly in my feet, but sometimes I even have it in my right hip and back between the shoulder blades. For a while I thought the neuropathy in my hip could have been cause by all of the injections that I generally administer to myself surrounding my navel area, but then it can flare up in just about any area of my body. I take Gabapentin 100-200mg. at bedtime, but it can be increased by your doctor up to 600mg. Also, there is a new medication that can be prescribed called Lyrica. Hope you find some relief. I am a nurse by occupation and when talking with another physician the other day, he told me that if I was prescribed 600mg. at bedtime, that I wouldn't experience any neuropathy throughout the day. I'm just afraid that such a large dose would have me walking around dazed all day. Good luck! Kathleen |

I have Neuropathy in both feet. It hurts so bad sometimes that I cannot sleep. I was actually diagnosed with Diabetes because of my Neuropathy. To make a long story short. I thought I had Carpotunnel and had 3 opinions on what to do for it. They all suggested surgery. upon getting a 4th opinion, he took a blood test and came back a week later and told me I had diabetes. The Doc stated that I probably had Diabetes for about 7 Years at this point. I actually see a Pain Management Doctor for my Neuropathy. I tried taking some of the Anti Depressants they say work for Neuropathy but, I started freaking out. Seeing things, being aggressive towards my wife and was angry all the time. My Doctor had to switch me Percocet 10 MG. I get relief and am able to sleep. You have to be very careful though, you can get addicted. Hope you get the relief you seek. |

I am also suffering from diabetic neuropathy. I have found that gabapentin is the best prescription medication that you can use to alleviate the pain so far. I have not found any other medication that will eliminate the pain, however gabapentin is not the solution. As you stated, it will only give you temporary relief. I would like to refer you to Toma's site if you do not know about it already. It is www.diabetic-diet-secrets.com. I highly recommend you to get in touch with toma and he could possibly give you some long term recommendations if not solutions. Toma is a diabetic and has a 5.0 on his A1C. He takes no medications and is now devoting his life to help other diabetics.
