I am going to wait and see. I know it didn't matter which one got in the office,he is going to have a hard time trying to straighten things out. This could be the best president that we have ever had or it could be the worst. So I will take the wait and see attitude.

I'm removing all my previous comments on this discussion as I'm not here to discuss politics, or war strategies. Someone wanted to know our thoughts about the president elect, and I made mine known. It is turning into something more than I think the originator wanted.
I came to this site to share in the support and information of other Diabetics, not to comment on our government.
I respect the opinions of all those who replied, but I'm not here for this kind of discussion. I apologize if I've offended anyone, but it is time for me to move on to my original purpose of joining this site.

Throughout the whole campaigning process, I found that BOTH the candidates resorted to unprofessional tactics, and therefore I do not like either of them. My biggest fear is what will happen if America pulls out of the Middle East, how soon will we be attacked once more? I believe our presence in the Middle East is a deterrent to those who may begin another uprising against us. Also, I believe that our military soldiers know the risks that they are taking being in the Middle East, and that they believe that their presence is needed there in order to maintain the American freedom that many of us take for granted.

That said, I will admit that we need to look right in our own country for things that also affect us on a day-to-day basis, such as illegal aliens taking advantage of *American* benefits!

I hope that God is with us all and He will guide our President-Elect in every decision that will protect us and help us through these rough years ahead of him.

SteveM replied November 7, 2008 7:11 PM

John, I don't know what bible you read - whether you are Jewish, Muslim or something else doesn't matter. Obama is a Christian who believes we each have a right to worship as each of us choose.

I supported Obama, and don't care if he runs a good war or not - just that he protects the US at home. But I really hope that he can straighten out this domestic mess that we're in.

I also pray that he will ensure that Diabetics receive the education, care & medicine we need to stay healthy regardless of ability to pay.

Lee Ann replied November 7, 2008 7:57 PM

I don't understand why there is even a discussion about what Obama does or doesn't believe in. Wasn't this country founded by people who were being religiously persecuted? Too many people have become the exact thing our founders fought against. To me, that is absolutely one of the most disheartening things I've witnessed regarding this past election. Our country is in sad, sad shape with so much intolerance. It sickens me.

On the military service issue, is it really that big of a problem? As far as I know, none of the UK Prime Ministers in the last 50 years have had active military service. A couple in the 60's were in world war 2 but I don't think they were really too much involved in the actual fighting. I don't believe that the British armed forces have been badly run overall. Maybe it's not such a bad thing Obama has no military experience?

Lee Ann replied November 7, 2008 9:49 PM

morris.js, I'm just pointing out how I see a lot of double standards here. People are criticizing Obama for this, that and the other, but I think it's a safe assumption those same people chose W, probably both times too. If people are going to offer criticism about Obama, which seems unfounded to start with since he isn't even President yet, I would just like those people to consider whether or not they're letting other biases interfere with making valid criticisms. Saying, 'you can't bring that up because that's not what this discussion is about' is just an avoidance technique.

I'm assuming you're referring to Vietnam. Vietnam started because of policies and decisions under Eisenhower, who had an extensive military background if I'm recalling my history lessons correctly. So if you're going to point fingers at the guys who inherited that mess, at least give some credit to the guy who started it.

I am hoping that Obama does get an affordable insurance plan for everyone, it's long over due. We can't keep putting it off and pretending it's not a priority. People are losing their homes due to the high cost of health care in this country. The federal government is pouring money into it so as I see it, it all needs to be fixed and all Americans should have health care coverage period. Obama campaigned that those who don't have insurance should get the same coverage as the do nothing Congress gets. Amen!

As Pres-Elect, I will support him and agree with others, that I hope he keeps a few of the promises. But I voted for McCain. A person who both in IL and in the US Senate failed to vote over 100 times in each place bothers me. His job is to vote on bills to support his constituents, yet he chose not to take sides. I also watched him on Oprah prior to his bid for the presidency. He said he wanted his girls to grow up in Chicago. Because of that, he flew to DC after they went to bed on Monday, then home on Thursday. Makes me wonder if they will move to DC now or if he'll consider the presidency a part-time job too. Sorry, I don't trust the guy. I'm originally from central IL and I rarely trust any politician from the Chicago area. I really hope I'm wrong and he will do a wonderful job. I'd gladly eat my words!

Sheryl replied November 6, 2008 5:22 AM

I think what we are all seeing here is not only a historic event but a president that will be challenged in many ways. Not only is he taking on a horrible economic situation, wars and how the world preceives us as Americans, but some Americans that see him as some kind of enemy.
I fully believe he will work harder to prove himself because I feel as the first black president, with this history being made, he does not want to be looked upon as a failure. He will have the eyes of the world on him not to mention the American people and I beleive he wants to stand proud for all of us. We should do the same for him.
I am so ready for change! Lets give him a chance.
Just my opinion.

Amen, Amy! He's obviously a brilliant man and one who intends to (and has thus far) reach across party lines to actuallly be the leader for all of us. He's at least willing to listen to and consider other points of view and to utilize the experience and expertise of those he feels will be best for his administration and our country. He didn't win this election without being the one most people wanted as our incoming President. I pray that others will at least watch and listen and give him a chance before condemning him. He has a long, hard road ahead of him, but he's already off and running. We need to realize that problems of the magnitude that we now have are not going to be solved overnight or in the immediate future. I applaud President Bush for his spirit of cooperation during this transition period thus far. He has shown real class. And, folks, Amy is right about the issue of health insurance. Something has to be done and as quickly as possible. I think Obama might just surprise a lot of you nay sayers.

On the one hand, I am heartened to see that Americans in general are able to look beyond the color of someone's skin. I found Obama's acceptance speech to be well-crafted, drawing on some of the more positive associations most of us have with President Lincoln as well as the realism that change will not happen overnight (nor will it happen if we do not make it happen).

On the other hand, I am discouraged by the nation's continued insistence on "relying on princes" -- or more accurately, relying on the overbloated, expensive, bureaucratic "government" to perform services that should be handled by the private sector, and relying on an altruism *that does not exist* in the public sector.

I did vote. I voted my conscience, which is neither Democratic nor Republican.

It's almost like you're suggesting there's actually been a president that has actually come through and kept all his promises. Also, whether or not a president is able to keep promises is hardly solely up to him. We don't live under a monarchy or dictatorship last I checked. Also also, let's not forget what a pathetic mire our country is in and how soiled our international reputation is now after the last 8 years of Republican leadership. Also, also also, it took current Republican leadership a few years to drive the country into this swampy ditch, so it's going to take some time to undo that damage.

Thanks for the link Amy.

Americans voted. Barack Obama is our President-Elect.

We all need to stick together and help each other when and where we can. No more political labels. Everyone has their beliefs and their opinions. Those don't always bode well in getting things accomplished though.

This community is full of people who care. We know what it is like to struggle, Every Day. We know what it is like to see others struggle, how hard it is to care for them.

We have a unique perspective on chronic illnesses. We can use that for Good.

So just remember, we are all in this together.

And I vow to Never comment on politics again because it can get heated. It don't see that it did here and I am glad for that. Again, that gets nothing done.

All Americans are struggling. We all have our issues. We all have our stories. Every last one of us.

And together we are strong and we can unite for the common good......

Well, the health care issue does bother me. If he wants to go the Canadian route, I hope no one here evr needs a heart transplant! You will be told the following: good news, we have a heart for you. Bad news, it will take 5 years to give it to you! I really do not see what anyone could do for the insurance problems of this country. there are too many of us who do not have insurance and pre-existing conditions. Yup, wants to medicare reforms, good ! but I am too young, so where does that leave me? Those of us with cronic conditions will always have a problem with higher premiums. I wish the ADA would come out with something for us to get supplies easier for the ones that do not have insurance. But money talks.

caspersmama replied November 7, 2008 2:49 PM

Under Obamas plan, those they do not have insurance will be offered insurance at the preminums the federal employees get. Which believe me is so cheap. I for one am anxious to get it going. My daughter is 23 and needs it. And for those of us that have insurance he wants to get the premiums lowered. Which would be great! I am a full supporter of the President-elect and can not wait till he takes office.

I believe Canada's health system is unique. It would not be used here and I don't believe anyone has ever proposed one similar to it in the past.

I don't believe that the “National Health Insurance Exchange” will be charged at the rate federal employees get, just that it will be run in a similar way. It sounds basically like an insurance agent where you'll be able to select from a bunch of different insurance plans from different insurance companies. I have no doubt that it will be cheaper and easier to get on a plan than it would be currently but how much cheaper seems to be the x-factor that's not really explained anywhere. The other side to this is a new program similar to medicare that will let small business that can't afford to offer insurance right now buy into and offer their employees health insurance. The last part that may help people who's employers don't have health insurance or don't pay much towards it will be required to pay a % of their payroll to either pick up a private one and offer it, increase the amount they currently contribute or pay into one of the public plans to cover employees. Bottom line is I doubt the "$2,500 average saving" will really be an average saving but it should mean that anyone who wants health insurance should be able to get some kind at a more reasonable price. The one downside is the children's coverage. It will be mandated that all children have insurance but it's still up to the family to get that insurance. Based on what I've read there will still be people who won't be able to afford healthcare and not be eligible for the really low cost options which may put some families in a not so good position. There are a lot more good points as well as potential pitfalls but it is a major shake up which is what's needed. Time will tell if it's been shaken in the right way.

caspersmama replied November 7, 2008 3:17 PM

Well I belive his new plan will be better than what we have now. That is my opinion. Others do not have to agree. That is one of the reason I supporter him after Hillary Clinton was defeated. After reading all the posts today I have a comment. what all of us are forgetting( Democrat or Republican) is that President -elect Obama does not take over till Jan 20, 2009. This country is in sad sad shape now. the past 8 years is under President Bush. Obama cannot do anything till he takes office. Obama had a press conference today and talk about what he wants to do but still cannot do it now. As far as the military experience. Did Bush have any? That was one of the reason why Obama chose Biden for his military dealings. Obama is smart enough to put together a smart cabinet that will help him figure out this mess we are in.

vgarrison replied November 8, 2008 7:50 AM

Exactly....the fact that Oboma doesn't have any military experiance basically can be considered irrelivant, if he is able to put together a cabinent of advisors and whatnot that have alot of experience....

I definately agree with Morrisjs. This is not a political site, but a medical one. If you were discussing President-elect Obama's stance on health issues, that is one thing, but that is not what is being done here. Leave the politics for other sites that are more suited for political discussions.

I never looked at it that way; but I am starting to see no matter who is president, they are just directed by someone else; We are the people of the US, but do they really judge the results of the presidential pic of the people? I think we will never know that answer.

You know, I have always thought that none of the last two candidates were a good choice, and after the news this morning I knew I was right. Now our president-elect said that he is going to have to change all that he promised while running, the only thing he is not going to change is the need to "change", I am sorry but I have been doubtful all along, but to tell the truth who would be right for the job. Whoever comes in is coming into one of the worst situations of the world for years. I do not mean to offend anyone, I say we have to be optomistic.

Goodmorning Every one now for my 2 cents worth. My family is Military all the way. My Dad, Brothers, Uncles and Grandparents all served in the Miltary and I am proud to be an American. Yes I love the Freedom we all enjoy in this country and we all came from different parts of the World at some point in History. This is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
We all get Dressed the same way and we All Worship the same God. So with that said I know that Obama will follow Gods prodding of his heart and serve us to the best of his ability. Just because he never served in the Military doesn't mean anything in my book as some of the Great Men in history never fought in a War. Give the man his due and lets let him do the Job that most of us put him in there to do.
May the Good Lord be with him and This Great Country in the Future and May He also be with all of our Boys and Girls that are keeping Us Safe and Sound over here weather they be overseas or on the homefront.
I started out for Hillary and ended up supporting Obama. The reason for this I feel I need to say is because every time we have a Democrat in Office we Gain Ground at home and overseas I am sorry to say Bush did not help us in the War we were over there longer than he promised us when he started the war and now it is up to the next man to do what he thinks is right for the Country. At least he says he will have an open door of all of us to give our oppions to him and our suggestions to help him run Our Country together as we should so if you have anything to say to him let him know and not complain if things don't go the way you want them too. I feel if we don't speak up we have no right to complain about anything in this Great Country. I will keep writing him at every turn I feel he needs to hear from me and yes I do get answers from his staff about my letters and his wife even sends answers to me. That is the way I stay in touch with what is going on in our Country.
Thanks for hearing me out.

I will support and pray for our New President. I didn't vote for him because of some things he stands for, that he agrees with but he got the votes to go in as our president so it is America's responsibility to stand in the gap in our prayers and put our faith to work that he will do good things for all of us. we make the "plans" but God "directs" the steps.

2catty replied January 14, 2009 8:56 PM

I'm just thinking surely he can't be to much worse than Bush. So I didn't vote for Obama because of the abortion thing but hopefully the pressure he is under and the fact he has a lot of people watching to see if he is going to live up to what he says he can do. And the fact he wants to make his mark as our first half black president, maybe he will rise to the occasion. Just my opinion. Which I am intitled.

When I saw the many entries here concerning this discussion I tried with everything within me to stay away from it but I can't help myself and responding. I may be making a big mistake in doing this but my heart want allow me to just simply act like I didn't see this and not enter into this. I wrote this to another very dear friend of mine and we both respect the others thoughts and opinions on everything that we discuss.

Well here goes and this is what I wrote to him:

I have to say this in the effort of what I know to be right I have seen administrations come and go in my 45 years of life and some of those people were elected by us good faith people who thought that they would make a difference and do the right thing when it came to the people that they were elected to serve, but they fail them miserably..........Here is a man elected to serve the people and is condemned before he can get started. All of the politicians before him have done things that they just simply received a slap on the wrist for the things they've done and told that they were not to be bad little boys or girls again..........All the Bushes of the world, McCain fans and followers, and the Obama bashers have to remember one thing that no one has the power that GOD HAS and IT'S HIS FINAL SAY SO of how the picture will end...........All of what is happening right now is terrible and it goes without saying caused by in part all the other trusted officials before Obama...........This one man isn't the down fall of this country and it appears that everyone is quick to lay things in his lap and point the fingers at him before he can get started.............As I have learned that destiny plays its part no one person caused this, but the out come of the state that this country is in just doesn't rest in the hands of one man alone; GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY not man...........Perhaps people should ask Him (GOD) who He wanted to run this nation and see what He has to say about it...........But no one did, nor have they even thought about it, well I did ask and this world or should I say this nation is in for one big surprise.........This is not a one man's job this is a job for everyone and until people start coming together and helping each other then things will remain the way it is and no one is seeing that God is fed up with all that is going on and He will not hear their cries until they themselves finally see the truth and the blame rest not on one man's shoulder, but on the shoulders of many that were trusted and appointed to run this country before him. But it is now one man who has to clean up the messes that was created on all sides, Democrats and Republicans alike created this mess, but remember that again GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY SO..........Remember that I still love you and know that this is just my opinion..........SMILES!!!!!!!

I wanted to read this post because I thought it was going to lead to a health care concern. Or maybe a health insurance concern.
As someone living with diabetes, I thought that might be a better topic concerning the President Elect. All we can do is wait and see, I am having major concerns about my health coverage.
Not a discussion for me to continue with but good luck and stay well!

This is a link to track Obamas progress.
He made approx 500 campaign promises and this meter keeps track of those promises. It's quite interesting to watch. I bookmarked it so I can see how things are progressing.
I think rather then listen to the news media that spreads fear we can actually watch progress and make up our own minds based on facts.

I understand that the needs of the country have altered about, concerning our help with jobs, economy and such.

But the only thing I have seen him sign to yet be decided by the senate, was healthcare for children and uninsured.

He went from wanting to use 300billion in bailouts to over 900billion, we will never get out of the hole.
So he capped some payrolls,

but look at all the pork still trying

to pass in that stimulus.

And what about the bad choices in his cabinet that have already been released.

To me, it just seems like he jumped before he thought
Claudia I am not afraid to say, I did not want him voted in; charisma, does not equal fair and balanced know how.

I do have a right to my own opinion, as all of you have

This is truely my last comment on this then go on with my health concerns..President Obama is a Man not a God not a fixerupper, He can only do what his cabinet and Co-constituents allow, He's not a miracle maker and what has been done to this country was not his making but his burden..So I pray to God to keep him strong, because He needs all the people of this United State to be his back.

There was a piece on CanadaAM this morning on how much grey hair has developed since he took office. Talk about stress! Let' hope he stays healthy.

Sheryl replied March 6, 2009 5:29 AM

I hope so too!
He has taken on a big, big job...The economy is free falling, not only here but, around the world. Not to mention the war issues, Iran, Russia, North Korea and just about the rest of the world problems. It's an awful lot for anyone to take on.

I would say he has a very full plate...and I certainly want to see him make a difference in these difficult times.

Deleted User replied March 9, 2009 9:26 AM

My only question is, what about the economy? The first task he was going to tackle, seems to be the biggest problems, and yeah, little things get lead to big, but we need the jobs now, the money now, help to keep homes now. I know he is trying but the order is all wrong.

Blooter replied March 10, 2009 3:58 AM

Littlemarm you seem to be quite critical of our new president....what are you doing to help?

Sheryl replied March 10, 2009 4:32 PM

Some people have the impression that it's the Presidents job to give us jobs, money and save us from our own selves. The greed, buying more then one could afford, bad banking practices all have to be corrected and it's going to be painful.
I think given the circumstances and the scoop of this crisis it's going to take more then our president to fix it.

Blooter replied March 11, 2009 1:30 AM

Sheryl you are so right, it is going to take the American people to wake up and realize they can make it without a handout from the government. We won't be able to have all we want but we do what we have to do to get ourselves through this crisis and quit blaming everyone else for problems that we have created for ourselves.

Blooter replied March 10, 2009 3:59 AM

I would certainly not want his job on a good day.

It is now the middle of June,09. He is no longer Present Elect . He is THE BIG GUY and over the past few months he has frightened me terribly. His health care program will surely limit the quality and accessibility of services. We are looking at Socialized Medical Care which hasn't worked in England,Canada or other Socialized "democacies'.Non -medical entities will be deciding what servicies we will receive as opposed to Health Care Professionals. I have little confidence in his plans for health care revision and I'm terrified of his other plans. We are on the verge of loosing America as our Fouding Fathers envisioned it.

All Presidents are a combination of good and bad. Who in their right mind would really want this job? They go into office because they want to help the American people. They are politicians whether they are Democrats or Republicans. What everyone forgets, it is the Senate and Congress which controls our country. I think Obama, like most Presidents, go into the office with a lot of idealist ways of thinking. But that is because they haven't been there before. Our daily environment may change a lot of their way of thinking....for instance, now Obama is leaning more towards McCain's campaign promises for healthcare. To get a grasp on all of the issues, you must watch and keep up with things on a daily basis. It has always been very difficult to make everyone happy and there have to be compromises. As for Obama's aging, yes, I think he is wondering "why did I do this to myself." But I think he has the level-headedness to understand he has to win over the Senate and the Congress. I think it is unjust to blame any one President for something because most times issues they get passed do not come into effect until after they leave office. The one thing that worries me about the healthcare plan....NOTHING is free! Obama promised "no new taxes" but we have already had numerous increases in taxes that we already pay and if the healthcare plan is passed, you can bet other things will increase, i.e., dollar increase in cigarette taxes, additional taxes on sodas, increase taxes on food. The country just doesn't have money to pay for what we already are committed to. I SAY PRAY FOR OUR PRESIDENT AND ELECTED OFFICIALS TO MAKE THE BEST DECISION FOR EVERYONE; AND, PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY AND SERVICEMEN. LET GOD BE IN CONTROL AND WE WILL BE ALRIGHT.
