I have been seeing some unwanted spikes in my BG the last week or so. Finally figured out what it was today…it's my coffee. I use coffeemate french vanilla in my coffee everyday and now I'm seeing spikes. I am going to experiment with different creamers to see what happens, because I am not giving up my coffee…I have had to give up so much so far, I am NOT giving coffee up. I do think I need to find a different creamer though.
My question is, what does everyone use in their coffee? Assuming you use cream (I have tried it black..can't do it).

This is similar to the way I prepared to stop smoking.I wanted to create a distastefull ,aversive association around smoking. In addition, when I did smoke, ,I would tell myself out loud," I hate this stuff, it's disgusting, unhealthy and I'm going to quit." I did not empty ash trays, put watter in the ash trays. These techniques assisted me to quit smooking. It didn't happen over night as it took time to replace the association between smoking and pleasure to one of "smoking andOMG,this is disgusting". I've been smoke free for 28 years. Sometimes, desparted people have to take desparated means. Pete,a former smoker.lol

[deleted] June 12, 2009 at 10:43 pm0 LikesI broke today on the non smoking front, hubby got me a pack of Lucky Strikes, thinking that may make me quit, but these things are way better than filtered smokes, lol. I think when I go to my new Internal Med doc, I'll ask him to go back on the patches. That seems to work really well, no jitters, and no bitchyness!!! I just really have the urge now to go get another tattoo!!!!

From the land of Starbucks… I drink my coffee black most of the time, but when the acid gets to my stomach I add REAL 2% milk, and don't worry about any calories or carbs (15 calories and 1.5 grams per tablespoon). If I needed to sweeten it, I would use REAL sugar, because granulated sugar has, per teaspoon, 15 calories and 4 grams. I would guess that none of us calculate our daily intake down to the gram, and we can adjust other foods we eat to allow this bit of enjoyment.
I prefer to eat "unprocessed" foods whenever possible, and have maintained my 5.5 A1c for many months with this approach (as well as loosing over 40 pounds).

There are sugar free non-dairy creamers with SPLENDA out there that are great. You might try one of these. I discovered these when I developed gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy.

I LOVE my coffee too and won't give it up. I drink 1-2 cups Monday through Friday…black, and 3-4 cups each day on the weekend with just a little coffee mate, sometimes regular and sometimes sugar free. I haven't noticed any spike in my blood sugar from either. Thankfully! Lisa

What about adding a fat free or low fat milk. I have been advised not to use creamers by my dietician. Still enjoy my coffee with low fat milk.

Yes I think it would do you good to change your creaer. I too like coffe and it is proven that coffee helps lower your boold sugars. However, you have to change the type of sweetener in order for it to work. Like instead of sugar use a substitute sweetener. I myself so this and it helps me lower my sugar.
Instead of using creamer I use flavord soy milk, like vanilla, and it is still taste good. -

Neither will I, Lanore! I do drink mine black, with just 1 aritificial sweetner. As for the cost, there came a point a while back when both coffee and gas had jumped so drastically that I was pondering which I'd give up (LOL). Decided I would have to cut out going anywhere and stay home and have my coffee!

I don't drink coffe so I can't help you directly with that. I do put milk in my tea but it isn't enough to cause BG spikes.
If you were a pump user, the answer would be simple - bolus for what you are adding to you coffee and that would take care of the problem. (But this probably isn't enough of an incentive to get a pump…)

Ok, guess I should put in my thoughts as well…LOL I went to "coffee college" in San Fransisco for a week a few years back, to learn more than I thought poosible about coffee…hee hee also, I have a commercial type Bunn coffee maker plumbed right in my water line in my kitchen, and makes a 1/2 gallon in about 3 minutes.. :)
I drink (2) pots or (1) gallon of coffee a day. I usualy drink it black, but sometimes in place of a desert, I will add some type of creamer and a sugar substitute.
I never have any problems with heartburn, (as a former police office, maybe there is some merit to "Policeofficer's" comments above…hee hee). It does not spike my BG levels, nor does it seem to cause me any fluid loss or need to "replenish" fluids. If I happen to be too busy to make and drink my coffee, I do not go into any kind of withdrawal symptoms from not having the caffiene, (and I don't drink anything else with caffiene in it).
So, other than probably making you other coffee lovers envious of me, I guess I cannot add anything useful to this discussion.
I thank God every day for allowing me the ability to have this one vice. :)May you all be able to find a way to enjoy your coffee!

I don't drink coffee since being Dx with diabetes. Reason being, I have to have my flavored creamers and just like you, they were raising my bs. Irish cream and french vanilla mixed was my favorite. Used to put it in hot chocolate also. How terrible of me, hu!? So I figured id I can't have my creamer I'm not going to drink coffee. I still miss it though.

I drink decaf coffee with stevia and heavy cream. Heavy cream actually has less carbs than skim milk. Be carefull though as some heavy creams actually have added thickeners and other things in it. Make sure the only ingredient is heavy cream.
-
In Memoriam: Goddess November 13, 2008 at 6:24 pm0 Likes
I also use stevia but I never thought to use heavy cream. It seems like it would have more cabs than skim milk.

Here are the carb counts of a cup (8 fluid ounces) of the following, according to the USDA database. Note: some milks are "protein-fortified", and sometimes powdered milk is added for more "body" - this will alter the carb counts, so be sure to check the label. Also, "cream" varies depending upon the amount of butterfat and lactose.
Whole milk - 11.4 grams of carbohydrate
2 % milk - 11.7
1 % milk - 11.6
Fat-free (skim) milk - 11.9
Buttermilk - 11.7
Goat's milk - 10.9
Half and Half - 10.4
Light Cream - 7.1
Heavy Cream - 6.6Evaporated milk (canned) - 25.3
Nonfat evaporated - 29.0
Sweetened condensed milk - 166 (not a typo)Milk Substitutes
Unsweetened soy milk - between 2 and 5, depending upon brand. (Note: Most soy milk is sweetened.)
Unsweetened almond milk - 2-3 grams, depending upon brand - again, most is sweetened
Coconut milk - 6.3 -

-

Coffee…that aroma in the morning, there is nothing like it.
However, did you know that for every 8 oz of coffee (caffinated) you have to drink an additional 8oz of water a day? The caffine in it, same for caffinated teas, depleates your body of vital water. That was enough to get me to at least start drinking decaf. I have a hard enough time trying to get 60-80 oz of water a day as it is.
When I do drink it, I add soy milk and stevia. I like that combination and it doesn't have all the hydroginated crap in it like many of the non dairy creamers do. Who wants to drink Palm Oil in your coffee? Read the labels and be prepared to be frightened. I miss those flavors, but you can get that in the actual coffee now a days. I love a Cinnamon and spice coffee.
I guess I kind of use it as a treat. My every day drink is water, camomile tea, or decaf unsweet tea.
-
kdroberts October 20, 2008 at 3:52 am0 Likes
I've heard that 8oz coffee you need 8oz water line before. Whenever I try to look it up I always come back to articles that debunk it as if you drink 8oz of coffee, you are in fact drinking 8oz of water. It seems to be the same for most drinks. They are not the best source for water but to say that drinking one 8oz cup of coffee essentially forces 16oz (8oz in the cup you drank plus the other 8oz you need to replace) of water out of your body doesn't seem to make any sense.
-
GabbyPA October 20, 2008 at 6:37 am0 Likes
I don't know that it forces it out, but the caffine in the drinks does something to us, that requires more hydration. Its kind of like drinking a beer to quench your thirst. Alcahol is the last thing you should drink when you are thirsty. It is a chemical reaction, not just the liqid. For the same reaon soda and milk or juice don't count as hydration. I will have to read more on it, and get it so I can explain it better. All I know is that I don't count my tea, coffee or other flavored drink equal to my water intake.
-
kdroberts October 20, 2008 at 6:45 am0 Likes
OK. Last study I read shows you retain at least 2/3 of the water you dink in a cup of coffee. Some suggest that coffee and water are expelled at exactly the same rate. Most of the recent ones seem to debunk the "coffee dehydrates you" position. Same thing for all the other drinks you listed. If you do a google search for "coffee dehydrates you" you get a bunch of sources to start researching.
-
GabbyPA October 20, 2008 at 6:49 am0 Likes
I will do that, thanks. I don't think it so much dehydrates you as much as it just doesn't add to the intake. I will read some more on it, and see what else I find.
-
kdroberts October 20, 2008 at 7:34 am0 Likes
I doubt there will ever be a solid answer. Even the amount of water we should drink is hotly debated by all areas of medicine. Some say you need less than a liter a day, some say more. Most do agree that the 8-8oz glasses a day is a lot and way more than the minimum amount needed. Some even say that you can get enough just from food. I think it will be one of those never ending debates. I personally don't think caffeine, alcohol or other drinks dehydrate you. Maybe they make you feel dehydrated but they don't actually dehydrate you.
Having said all that, you're not really going to go wrong by drinking 8-8oz glasses of water a day unless you have some medical problems. One of those may not help but shouldn't hurt kind of things.
-
GabbyPA October 20, 2008 at 7:38 am0 Likes
Yeah, it is like so many things out there. One say red, the other says blue. It is hard to make sense of it all. I would rather drink water than other things, so I guess that is my story and I'm sticking to it. LOL!!
I think sometimes we read so much we just confuse ourselves even more. It is hard to sift thru it all.

Find one that has a low acidity. It's hard to give specific examples because it differs wildly depending on where you buy it. Generally speaking kona and blue mountain (100%, not blends) are always going to be low acid, but they are also the most expensive types of coffee you can buy at $30+ a pound. There's a great coffee roaster/seller called coffee am (www.coffeeam.com) who go great coffee and has a roast profile chart that will show which are low acid and which are not. Here's the chart http://cjgo.stores.yahoo.net/coroch.html
