Like "Like Gabby, I pay out of pocket for my strips and use an Abbott Precision Extra meter which runs about $25, but strips are about $22 per 50. The doc does need to write a script for strips if your insurance is to cover them, and some will say "as needed" but most will restrict you. However, strips are not medication and you can purchase them without a script if you want to go over and above what the doc prescribes on your own dollar (which I recommend if you can). I thought oatmeal was healthy too until I went through my carb counting class. It came off my "can eat" list immediately after that and was replaced with eggs, a small fruit serving, some protein like chicken and nuts (not all at the same meal though). The more you test, the more you learn is my theory."
