Like "Howdy Joan Welcome to Diabetic connect! I was pretty much like you and listened to my Dr when first Dx'd in 1995. He put me on Metformin (Met). My Dr. however was more kind than yours. I now I don't think I'd allow a Dr to speak to me as yours had to you at that time. To me it seems as though your Dr is on a power trip. I would have looked for another Dr post haste. I would do all I could to learn all I could about diabetes (and this is one of the best places to do that). I really didn't begin to get on top of my diabetes mellitus T2 (DMT2) until after I had been on this site for about 2 to 3 yrs and participated intensely in the discussions. I had even learned how to manage my DMT2 without the use of medications.. My only regret is that I waited too long and made too many mistakes in my own self-care. I now have burning neuropathy from my knees to toes and I also have kidney failure for which I must go to dialysis 3x/wk. Those things will not go away (unless I get a kidney transplant for the kidney issues). So don't let the Dr who chewed you out win. The quicker you get on top of your management of DMT2 the better off you will be. Perhaps you might not even need Met or other DM medications. I had gotten off of insulin in 2011 and manage my DM by eating right. I have developed an eating plan which helps me control my DM without the use of meds, I'd be willing to share it with you should you wish. Praying God's richest blessings be upon you and yours.
