What's the Best Exercise For Type 2 Diabetics?

From Cindy Riley 2008-05-14 10:07:28 -0500 50 Comments

VA new randomized control trial found that both aerobic exercise—such as jogging, cycling or walking—and resistance exercise—such as weight lifting—improved glycemic/blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. However, the best results were received when patients combined the workouts. Each participant in the study, published in the journal, "Annals of Internal Medicine," was evaluated on the changes in A1c value, a number that reflects blood sugar concentrations. A drop of 1 percent in this value is associated with a 15 to 20 percent drop in risk of heart attack or stroke and a 25-40 percent drop for risk of diabetes related eye disease or kidney disease.

The need for exercise cannot be overstated, but due to various factors we are not all able to go to a gym to meet our exercise needs. For some it is a matter of cost. For others it is a matter of availability of a gym. And for others the presence of additional health factors such as osteoarthritis of knee or hip joints can limit the ability to do some of the beneficial exercises. When discussing exercise and showing videos of exercise, it would be good to discuss the alternatives to the exercises performed in a gym.

This all is what I have been told before and used to do, but I can no longer even take a short walk without tremendous pain. I just keep a good attitude and do what I can.

I've been doing cardio regularly for a year and sporadic strength training. This year, my goal is to make the strength training as regular as the cardio. I haven't joined a gym yet. I'm using a free site (sparkpeople.com) to help me and they have LOTS of free exercise videos for both cardio and strength training. They also help you track nutrition too.

I try to do some walking , petaling sitted, and using the thing I use for petaling on a table to get upper arm exercise. I have to start small and work up to a 10 min or so period, You don't need a gym or all the fancy stuff to get results. I am puffing after 10 minutes so the doctor told me to break up the periods in to small blocks. Ok one step at a time. I am 75,but I am working at it. I also have a lot of stiffness and pain in the morning when I awake, but this small amount of excerise helps the pain too with out any pills. The old adage is true" Use it or lose it"

I have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain. I can't do exercises like this. Water therapy would be great but I have no pool nearby.

I have chronic pain and FMS. There is no way I could do any of that (I don't think). I wish I had a pool nearby to do some water aerobics, but I don't. What about people like me?

Very informative and I know this information to be true. I only work out 4x a week as suppose to the man in the video but I can tell right away in my numbers and my aches and pain if I do not exercise the 4 x a week. It really makes a difference.
