SUGAR BABIES: “The Youngest Faces of Diabetes,” Episode 5

Prince, a teenager from Brooklyn, has had diabetes since he was 11. He says the biggest challenge is informing people about his disease.

"Because when you tell people you have diabetes you’re stuck explaining what it is, and after you explain it multiple times they’re still asking the same questions, like ‘What’s your blood pressure?’" he says. "This has nothing to do with my blood pressure. I get the same questions all the time."

But the hardest relationship might be the one he has with his mother as the two try to work together to manage his disease. "My biggest conflict for my mother and me is my diabetes and my blood sugar readings," Prince says.

SUGAR BABIES is an upcoming documentary, directed by Jenny Mackenzie that examines the public heath epidemic of diabetic children in America. Diabetic Connect and Diabetes Mine have exclusive access to excerpts of the film.

Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are on the rise and threaten to become a healthcare crisis in the next decade. SUGAR BABIES tells the story of the two types of diabetes and highlights six family’s stories, as clinicians and health experts try to answer the question that has bedeviled us for two thousand years: why is there no cure for two types of diabetes that are now ravaging America’s youth?

This is a terrific video. I have not tried to watch any videos lately because my computer keeps breaking them up and I restart the video. This is great and I think every parent witth a child who has diabetes and if they can let their child watch it with them, this could provide a wonderful education and insight to them.
