For patients experiencing kidney or renal failure, dialysis is a process for removing waste and excess water from the blood and is used primarily to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function. Dialysis is an imperfect and temporary solution. The process is performed by pumping a patient's blood through a machine called a dialyzer, which is composed of thousands of tiny synthetic hollow fibers. Waste and excess water are removed during the filtration and the cleansed blood is pumped back into the patient.
