Central Alpha Agonists or Alpha-2 Agonists are medications used to treat high blood pressure. Generally, Alpha-2 Agonists are only used when all other treatments for high blood pressure have failed. This medications works to lower blood pressure by stimulating alpha-receptors in the brain which open peripheral arteries easing blood flow. Most commonly, an Alpha-2 Agonist is used in combination with a diuretic.
