Metformin, Actos, and Avandia are just a few of the most common diabetes medications prescribed. Find out what others are saying about their diabetes medications and discuss medication side effects with members of the diabetes medication forum—and, of course, your doctor.
How does Metformin work? Do I take it if my numbers are near or below 100? I have type 2 and test often. Sometimes in the mornings, I'm at 89, 93, 113, so I'm very nervous about taking Metformin. I've already cut the dose in half. My neighbor says metformin can't drop sugars too low. I did lose weight & I walk my dog so I can drop my numbers, however since my hip surgery so I don't feel like the long walks as much. if I cheat, my numbers go to 160-180 but a short walk drops it by 40 points.
I am 31 years old, and was diagnosed with diabetes at age 19. Been on and off meds for years (most recently off). I have never had side effects of any meds before except the usual GI (extreme, but would typically subside after a while). I was placed back on meds five weeks ago: Glipizide, Metformin, and Lantus. After starting the meds, I started getting uncontrollable pain. The pain ranges from dull and achy, to tingly shocks, to searing tearing ripping pain. ALL OVER. My arms, my back, my hips, thighs and feet. One doctor suggested neuropathy, but a second opinion advised it wouldn't come on all over and all of a sudden. I also am always cold to the bone now. I have read other people complain of the same problem. Are these common side effects of any of the meds? I tried stopping the Met on my own and the pain started to subside. My doctor will not return my calls. I can't sleep at night. I am desperate. Are these side effects normal and if so is there hope they will ever go away? Do all diabetes meds have these types of effects?
I'm having trouble with Metformin, including periodic battles with diarrhea. My doctor switched me to metformin ER made by Sondoz, but it was worse with severe gas pains. I read somewhere that the brand name Glucophage would be better and have less problems. I have been taking 500mg 3 times a day, along with glyburide 2.5 to 3 times a day. Any suggestions?
