Is it important to eat food totaling four carbs per meal at each meal, and, if so, why? I am a type 2 diabetic and need to lose weight.
The amount of carbohydrate to eat at each meal is different for everybody and is based on certain factors such as age, gender, weight, level of physical activity and extent of diabetes control. As an example, some women may need just three carb choices, or 45 grams of carb, at a meal, whereas some men may need five or six carb choices (75 to 90 grams of carb) at a meal. A starting point for many people is to aim for four carb choices per meal until they meet with a dietitian for a more individualized eating plan. It sounds as if you’re thinking four carbs per meal may be too much for you, given that you want to lose weight. I’d recommend that you ask your physician for a referral to meet with a dietitian who can help guide you as to how much to eat from all food groups, not just carbohydrate foods.
