Metformin is a medicine used, along with meal planning and physical activity, to treat type 2 diabetes. It’s a very safe and effective diabetes medicine. Metformin may also be prescribed to help prevent type 2 diabetes, as well as to treat polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition in which the ovaries form many small cysts. These cysts produce hormones that can wreak havoc in a woman’s body, causing infertility, high blood pressure and even diabetes. For women with PCOS, metformin may help not only with blood glucose control and insulin resistance, it can also help restore fertility.
