Help! I, the world's worst eater, have just been diagnosed with diabetes. It is totally unrealistic for someone to tell me :Eat veggies, forget your pizza and other junk food" What should I do?

You’re right – it IS unrealistic to be told that you can never eat pizza or a favorite food again. And the good news is that a diagnosis of diabetes does not mean that you can’t enjoy foods that you like. The key is learning how (and how often) to fit these foods into your eating plan. Because no two people are alike, there is no one “right” way to eat when you have diabetes. In addition, your diabetes treatment plan and management goals are likely quite different than someone else’s who has diabetes. Therefore, I’d strongly recommend that you meet with a dietitian and also consider attending a diabetes education program (there are likely offerings right in your community) to learn about how to best manage all aspects of your diabetes, including eating. Ask your doctor for a referral to a dietitian and to a diabetes educator or a diabetes education program. These services are most likely covered by your health care plan.
