Could you help me verify that whey protein helps eliminate belly fat? I would like to ask my doctor about the Mayo Clinic study about whey protein and belly fat (common for diabetics). I've lost 44 pounds since January 2012 and I have 15 pounds more to go. I still have some belly fat. Thank You, Rachael
Hi Rachael. Congratulations on your weight loss! I don’t believe the Mayo Clinic conducted the study about whey protein. Nevertheless, a small study published in 2011 reported that subjects who consumed whey protein lost about two pounds and approximately an inch off of their waistline without dieting. It’s probably too soon to know if whey protein really does help blast away belly fat, as more research needs to be done. If you’re interested in trying it, though, talk with your healthcare provider first. In the meantime, other steps that you can take to help shrink belly fat include doing regular physical activity (at least 30 minutes most days of the week); eating more soluble fiber (found in oats, beans, citrus fruits and apples); eating whole grain foods, such as whole wheat bread and brown rice; avoiding, or at least limiting, foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup; and aiming for about 6-8 hours of sleep every night.
