How many carbs should I have daily? I have type 2 diabetes and am going to start a 1500 calorie diet.
This is a question best answered by meeting with a dietitian. A dietitian will take into consideration your food preferences, how physically active you are, , how well your diabetes is controlled, and lifestyle factors (to name a few) in order to help you determine how much carbohydrate is best for you. I’d encourage you to ask your physician for a referral to a dietitian in your community. In the meantime, you can get started by aiming for between 150 and 170 grams of carb per day (that’s about 40 to 45% of calories from carbohydrate). Also, it may be easier to think of how much carb to aim for per meal, rather than per day. A good starting point is 45 to 60 grams of carb per meal, and then about 15 grams of carb for any snacks that you might eat.
