Q:

if you have high blood pressure and diabetic can you still drink coffee and tea to reduce sugar?

Amy Campbell

A:

Coffee and black tea contain caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to temporarily increase blood pressure in some people but not others. And even if you have high blood pressure, you may still be able to drink coffee and tea, but you may need to limit the amount. Talk with your healthcare provider about this. He or she can give you more specific guidance, based on how well-controlled your blood pressure is. On a side note, it’s best not to rely on drinking coffee or tea to lower blood glucose levels. While there’s some evidence that both black and green tea may help reduce blood glucose, more research is needed. A healthy eating plan, physical activity and, in many cases, medication are the best ways to lower high blood glucose levels.
