Q:

Do I have diabetes? I have been experiencing extreme fatigue, sudden nausea, a bacterial infection in my vagina itchy, I've been told my breath smells sweet and every once in a while I have trouble focusing my left eye, usually after waking up in the morning.

A:

Fatigue, recurring infections, blurry vision and fruity smell to the breath can all be signs of diabetes. If you are worried about it, it is best to go to your doctor’s office and get tested for diabetes. The first test they can do is a finger-stick blood glucose. This can be done quickly, right in the doctor’s office. A normal level is less than 140. Other lab tests that can be ordered are an A1C test (the goal for this is to be less than 6.5 %) and a fasting blood glucose level (goal less than 125). These tests can help rule out diabetes. If these are all within normal range, other reasons for your symptoms will need to be explored.
