Q:

What am I doing wrong? My potassium is low even though I eat lots of fruits and vegetables and whole grains. My doctor has put me on Klor Con. My A1C was 6.4, my weight is 114 and I am 72.

A:

Blood levels of potassium may be low for a number of reasons. Some of the most common reasons include diarrhea or the use of diuretics (water pills) or laxatives . Other factors that may contribute to low potassium are certain types of kidney problems, magnesium deficiency, Cushing’s disease, malnutrition or leukemia. Klor-Con is a medication that contains potassium chloride and is used to treat low potassium, also known as “hypokalemia.” This, along with your fruit, vegetable and grain intake should help bring your potassium level back into a normal range. However, I’d suggest that you ask your doctor why your potassium level was low to begin with.
