Should I be worried about Actos in light of the claims it causes bladder cancer?
Actos can be a useful medication in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Although Actos can be effective in improving blood glucose levels, there are possible side effects including weight gain, leg edema, increase risk of fracture, and possible increased risk of bladder cancer. A recent meta-analysis indicated an increased risk of bladder cancer with Actos, especially at the higher dosage level. One thing to consider is that the risk of bladder cancer is roughly 1 in 1000 in patients with type 2 diabetes and this risk increases to approximately 1.3 per 1000 patients in patients with type 2 diabetes taking Actos. So, though overall the risk of bladder cancer increases, it is still low in patients with type 2 diabetes taking Actos. You should discuss with your healthcare provider your concerns about the benefits and risks of taking Actos, as well as whether there are alternative medicines available.
