Should i get a second opinion about my diabetes? I went to see the doctor and he gave me some tests and said that i have prediabetes. The nurse said that my blood sugar level was 121. I am a woman and I had not eaten. Is this high or in normal range?
If you had a morning glucose (before eating) of 121 mg% - this would be considered “impaired fasting glucose”; that is, it would mean that you have an increased risk of developing diabetes. A normal fasting glucose would be 60-99 mg%. If one has a fasting glucose of 100-125 mg%, the person is considered “at increased risk of developing diabetes.” A fasting glucose of 126 or above would be consistent with having diabetes. Other criteria for diagnosing diabetes include a random glucose of over 200 mg% or an A1C of 6.5% or above. The A1C gives an average glucose value over the past 2-3 months. Since your fasting glucose was 121 mg%, I would suggest that you talk with your healthcare provider about perhaps doing a repeat fasting glucose and/or A1C for further evaluation.
