Q:

I was diagnosed with type 2 a year ago and I've been taking MetforminER since then. But last month I got metformin and I noticed I have a rash on my hands for around a week and I didn't change anything in my diet. Is that an allergic reaction to this metformin? What is the difference between metformin and metformin ER?

A:

It’s possible that your rash is due to the metformin, but you would need your healthcare provider to examine the rash and determine the cause. Rashes can occur due to a number of factors, including medications, detergents, soap, lotions, foods and stress. Metformin ER is just an extended-release version of metformin, and some people find that this form works better at controlling blood glucose levels.
