A:

From your description, it sounds like you have a nerve that is getting irritated. Nerves can get irritated for a number of reasons, and when you have diabetes, trying to determine whether the symptoms are from the diabetes or from something else can be challenging. It is important to see your primary care doctor to get an evaluation. Sometimes even the primary care doctor is not able to determine the cause, and in this case you will want to see a neurologist who specializes in nerve conditions. The nerve condition associated with diabetes is called “neuropathy.” Typical diabetic neuropathy starts in the feet with numbness and tingling, but may also include symptoms of burning and pain. The pain is not usually shooting but, as stated, nerve problems can be complicated to diagnosis, so the first step you will want to take is to set up an appointment with your primary care doctor.
