Q:

My husband is on two insulin pens and his glucose is still over 300. What do we do?

Dr. William Sullivan

A:

Most likely your husband is using a rapid-acting insulin pen as well as a long-acting insulin pen. The response to insulin is quite variable among people with diabetes. Some people respond to low dosages of insulin while others may respond to higher dosages. Occasionally, a person that requires a high dose of insulin is switched to more potent insulin such as U500 insulin (which is 5 times more potent than the usual U100 insulin). I would suggest that your husband review his insulin plan with his healthcare provider.
