Could I be taking too many vitamins with my metformin?
I’m not sure which vitamins you’re taking, so I can’t accurately answer your question. However, there is evidence that metformin can decrease the absorption of vitamin B12, thereby leading to a B12 deficiency. A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to a condition called “pernicious anemia.” Symptoms of pernicious anemia include fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhea, nerve damage and confusion. I would suggest that you ask your physician to check the vitamin B12 level in your blood (which can be done with a simple blood test) at your next appointment. You may need a B12 supplement if your level is low, and certainly, if you are deficient.
