My morning blood sugar is 83. I eat at 8 a.m., then before I eat at 11, I take my blood sugar and it is always in the 60s. Does that mean I'm not eating enough at 8 a.m. for it to drop so low three hours later? My doctor has me check my blood sugar four times a day, three to four days a week.
I’m going to make an assumption that you are taking medication to help manage your diabetes. If your blood glucose is always in the 60s before your 11 am meal or snack, then it’s likely that you are taking too much medication. I’d suggest that you contact your physician to discuss the possibility of decreasing the dose of your medication. Eating more food at breakfast is an option, but it could lead to weight gain. In the meantime, make sure that you are eating at least 30 grams of carbohydrate for breakfast (for example, two slices of whole grain toast), along with a source of healthy fat, such as peanut butter, nuts, an egg, or trans-fat-free margarine.
