Swelling or edema is caused by the accumulation of fluid in the interstitial space – the space between the cells in the tissue of the body. There are many potential causes of edema. Conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and liver failure typically cause bilateral edema. Edema can cause discomfort, but is not typically accompanied by redness, swelling, and pain. These raise concern that you may have an infection in the skin. Any break in the skin can be a portal for entry of bacteria. It is important to determine whether or not you have an infection because if you do, you will need to be treated with antibiotics. Diabetes can put you at risk for developing edema. Diabetes can also slow wound healing if you do have an infection. So, the symptoms you describe are not symptoms of diabetes, but they are related to diabetes and it is important that you have your legs evaluated by your doctor.
