Q:

A dietician has me on a diet of 1200 calories a day due to the need to loose a large amount of weight for a knee replacement operation. I take Metformin and insulin, as well as Morphine for pain. My daily diet inclues mostly vegs, fruits, some meat, fiber bars and bran muffin due to constipation issues. I also take stool sofeners and fiber pills. I keep adjusting the insulin but still have problems with low blood sugars ( 60-80). What else can I do, I need to loose the weight?

A:

Please talk with your healthcare provider or diabetes educator about adjusting your insulin doses further. Eating less food, plus the fiber that you are consuming, is likely contributing to your low blood glucose levels. Weight loss will be difficult for you if you continue to have lows, so it’s important that your insulin is reduced accordingly.
