Q:

I am taking humalog 1 unit per 10 units of carbs, and 1 unit per 25 over bs goal, and 40 units of lantus at night. My question is what happens if you are not able to take these medications any longer due to cost? What are the side effects besides sugars will be out of control again?

A:

If you cannot afford your insulin, talk with your doctor. He or she may be able to switch you to a less expensive type of insulin that can help you manage your diabetes. You can also contact various pharmaceutical assistance programs that provide help for people who can’t afford their medicines or supplies. You do have to meet certain eligibility criteria, however. A list of these programs can be found on the American Diabetes Association’s website at http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/treatment-and-care/health-insurance-options/prescription-assistance.html.
