My husband has type 1 diabetes. Every time he eats anything he suddenly feels that his stomach is upset. He takes reflux medication. Why is this happening every time he eats?
He could have a condition called “gastroparesis.” This is a complication of the nervous system that happens more commonly in type 1 diabetes. In this condition, the stomach does not empty as quickly as it should, causing nausea, bloating and/or vomiting when eating. In addition to the nausea, another symptom of gastroparesis is low blood glucose levels after meals. This occurs because the mealtime insulin peaks prior to the food being digested. Have your husband talk to his doctor about this condition and how it is diagnosed and treated. In the meanwhile, eating small, frequent meals low in fat and fiber may help.
