Q:

Should you take Metformin before or after your meal?

Amy Campbell

A:

Metformin is a safe and effective medicine that’s used to treat type 2 diabetes. In general, metformin is very well tolerated, but some people do experience gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, cramps, gassiness and diarrhea. These side effects usually go away over time, but if they do occur, they can be minimized by taking the metformin with food, rather than on an empty stomach. You can take metformin before a meal as long as you eat right after taking it, or right after you finish your meal.

Hi Pynetree,
Depending on any other health issues that an older adult may be having, it's certainly possible that both blood glucose and A1C goals may be set higher. It's important to discuss your goals with your healthcare provider and find out what's best for you.

I've been experiencing diarrhea, gassiness, cramping with Metformin 500MG ( 2000 MG a day ) My Doctor prescribed Januvia also to be taken with Metformin. I have heard very bad reports about this medication. Not sure I want to take it and risk problems with the Pancreas.

I have had to ease into taking 500 mg. I would "crash", sometimes at the wheel of my car while driving on the freeway! So, I cut them in half and even in quarters so I could work up to the dose that works best for me. Talk to your doctor about that as a possibility.
