Q:

I was told diabetics shouldn't eat lemons. Is that true? Because I eat at least two a day. I love my lemons.

A:

A 3-ounce lemon contains just 24 calories and 8 grams of carbohydrate, which is much less than many other fruits. Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C and they contain antioxidants that may protect against cancer and boost heart health, as well. However, you should be careful about eating lemons as the acid that they contain can erode your tooth enamel, increasing the risk for cavities and tooth decay. As much as you love your lemons, I’d suggest that you speak to your dentist about how they may affect your teeth.

If you have kidney problem and are watching potassium levels then you have to be careful with lemons. The are high in potassium as with oranges.

I don't have to worry about my teeth anymore because I wear dentures. Thanks to a family history of gum problems my family never told me about while I was growing up. But thank you very much for giving me the answers I needed to my lemon question.

I too love lemons but have never heard that diabetics should avoid them. Bad on enamel of our teeth though.

Also, I'm on Glipizide. I was on that and Metformin, but I ran out of metformin about a month ago and the pharmacist hasn't been able to get ahold of my doctor for the refill, but my blood sugar count has been between 130-150 all week for the whole month. I'm watching what I eat and keeping up with Diabetic Connect on everything. To me that's one less pill I have to take. Is that okay? I'm planning to let my doctor know when I see him.
