How often should I have my a1c checked? I am type 2. My Doc says once a year.

Dr. William Sullivan

A1C testing is recommended 2-4 times per year, depending upon each individual situation. For example, for a person with well-controlled diabetes on diet/exercise alone who is doing well, checking A1C twice yearly may be adequate. However, for an individual with variable blood glucose control who has frequent changes in medications, checking A1C every 3 months would be more appropriate. You should talk with with your healthcare provider about how frequently to check your A1C, based on results of your home blood glucose monitoring and your treatment plan.
