Q:

I am unemployed and desperately looking for a job, but I have lost my health insurance and can't afford my insulin and lantus. Do you have any tips to help me?

I’m sorry that you are going through such a difficult time. Unfortunately, diabetes can be a very expensive disease to have. If you have an endocrinologist or primary care provider, they can probably give you insulin samples. They may not be able to give you enough to meet all of your needs, but it could help. Another option is to talk with your doctor about changing from Lantus to NPH. Wal-Mart sells insulin under the brand name ReliOn . It is made by one of the major insulin companies and is less expensive than the newer types of insulin. It is available as NPH, Regular, and 70/30. A vial of 1000 units costs $24.88 according to their web site. Also, each of the insulin companies has patient assistance programs. It requires some paperwork, but if you qualify, you could get your insulin for free.
